Next week’s Bellator return to its Northern California home base has a former champion as a late addition to the lineup. With Tony Johnson (9-3 MMA, 2-1 BMMA) out with an injury, former middleweight champ Rafael Carvalho (16-6 MMA, 7-5 BMMA) will step in to take on Dovletdzhan Yagshimuradov (18-7-1 MMA, 0-2 BMMA) on the preliminary card at Bellator 277. Promotion officials announced the change Thursday. Bellator 277 takes place April 15 at SAP Center in San Jose, Calif

TEMECULA, Calif. — Tony Johnson has had one hell of a long road to become an overnight sensation. The 36-year-old San Jose, Calif., native, who also boasts an 8-1 boxing record, has been doing this for quite some time – he competed in Strikeforce all the way back in 2008 – but only now is he starting to get some recognition for his efforts. Johnson’s wild knockout of kickboxing standout Joe Schilling in the middleweight main-card opener of Bellator 229 on Friday night went viral. And while the clip might be the first you’ve seen of him, that’s in fact five wins in a row for Johnson, who also earned a victory on Dana White’s Contender Series this past summer. So you can’t blame Johnson, really, for taking a minute to bask in the attention after a long and winding road in the sport, which started way back in 2007.

An outstanding kickboxer, Schilling has been on the wrong end of several bad moments during his attempts to cross over to MMA, the latest of which happened Friday night during the middleweight main-card opener of Bellator 229. Schilling (4-6 MMA, 3-3 BMMA), who seemed well on his way to victory in a battle of attrition against San Jose’s Tony Johnson , threw an elbow, then left himself wide open for a wicked counter left hand to the jaw which knocked him cold. The time of the stoppage was 2:07 of Round 3, as Johnson (8-2 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) won his fifth consecutive fight

Veteran heavyweight Tony Johnson has signed a multi-fight deal with Russia’s Fight Nights Global, and “Hulk” is looking to make a big splash in his promotional debut. “I have four fights on this contract,” Johnson told MMAjunkie. “I would like one of those fights to be Vitaly Minakov .” Minakov (20-0) is a former Bellator heavyweight champion who walked away from the promotion in 2014 in favor of fighting in his native Russia. He’s since rattled off six consecutive stoppage wins under the Fight Nights Global banner and currently sits at No. 7 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA heavyweight rankings

For three years, the Bellator heavyweight title sat on the shelf. Scott Coker aims to change that soon. After stripping Russian champ Vitaly Minakov of the belt in May, Coker told MMAjunkie Radio that a new champion will be crowned by the first quarter of next year. “It’s going to be a fun run for the belt,” Coker said Thursday. Tonight, two assets in the big-man division – onetime title challenger Cheick Kongo (24-10-2 MMA, 6-2 BMMA) and prospect Tony Johnson (10-2 MMA, 3-0 BMMA) – meet at Bellator 161 to stake their claim as future title contenders.
