Sonnen’s quotes rang throughout the blogosphere and MMA fans began to salivate at the prospect of the brash American battling “The Axe Murderer” from Brazil. Talk of the potential showdown was subsequently nixed when UFC president Dana White explained that he contacted Silva, and the Brazilian apparently demanded a portion of the PPV cut or he would not fight

The war of words between UFC light heavyweights Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva has been in full swing since Sonnen’s victory over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at the inaugural UFC on FOX Sports 1 event in Boston earlier this month. Moments after defeating Shogun – a former training partner of Silva’s – Sonnen took to the post-fight microphone and had a few words for “The Axe Murderer.” “Wanderlei Silva, 6-feet tall, 205 pounds; boy, until I met you, I didn’t know they could stack crap that high,” he yelled into the microphone. “Wanderlei Silva, three months, you and the bad guy.” Sonnen then strolled out of the cage and the MMA world was set a blaze with another fiery promo from the “Gangster from West Linn.” Silva, who apparently wanted the fight as well, was game for the showdown and made it very clear that he wanted the fight.

This past week, Jackson and Bellator made a surprise announcement that Ortiz had signed with the promotion to return from retirement to fight Jackson, a friend and sometimes training partner. The two will meet in the main event of Bellator’s first pay-per-view, and we’ll stream the call with the two fighters and CEO Bjorn Rebney. SEATTLE — Welterweight opponents Jake Ellenberger and Rory MacDonald say they’ve had fun taking jabs at each other in the weeks leading up to Saturday’s UFC on FOX 8 event. For the fans, a round of Twitter sparring, which went to the witty Ellenberger, has provided some sizzle to an otherwise bland promotional buildup. But now, as a potential title shot hangs in the balance for the winner of the co-headliner at Seattle’s KeyArena (FOX, 8 p.m. ET), the two standouts agree it’s all about business. “I’m pretty confident that this will be a No. 1 contender fight, and verbally, I’ve been told that, too,” Ellenberger (29-6 MMA, 8-2 UFC), 28, told USA TODAY Sports and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “I’m not looking past this fight.” Neither is the grim-faced MacDonald (14-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC), though his path could lead to a move up to middleweight if he keeps his word not to challenge his friend and training partner, Georges St-Pierre , who’s scheduled to defend his welterweight title this fall against Johny Hendricks . Weidman took the fight to Silva from the opening bell, taking “the Spider” down and working his ground and pound attack, but couldn’t keep him there. Silva danced and taunted Weidman for much of the latter half of the opening frame, and again to start round two. UFC heavyweight Travis Browne agrees to disagree with sometime training partner Tim Kennedy on the issue of fighter pay. “Everybody has a choice,” Browne told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “You don’t have to fight. You don’t have to be in this business, just like if I want to wake up and eat oatmeal instead of cream of wheat, it’s my choice.” Browne (14-1-1 MMA, 5-1-1 UFC), who next fights Alistair Overeem (36-12 MMA, 1-1 UFC) at UFC on Fox Sports 1 1, chose to walk away from a successful career as a K-9 trainer in San Diego to join the UFC. He’s been a full-time fighter since. The 30-year-old fighter admitted he’s seen lean times during his tenure in the industry-leading promoter and said managers have helped him make ends meet while he pursued his dreams of becoming a champion. “They helped to get me where I’m at now,” he said.
