Former NFL’ers turned UFC employees Matt Mitrione and Brendan Schaub met in the cage at UFC 165 Saturday night at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. Unlike their previous occupations, this one allows powerful blows to the head of their opponents. In fact, it’s encouraged. However, for the first 30 seconds of their showdown on Saturday, nobody told these two heavyweight sluggers, as there was not a single strike thrown. The former training partners and castmates on The Ultimate Fighter 10 met in the center of the Octagon without touching gloves. The pre-fight trash talk was hot and heavy between the former friends, and after the first 30 seconds had ticked away, the two big men started exchanging with reckless abandon.

Mark Munoz Parts Ways with Jason Miller, Hopes He Can Find His Way Out of Recent Turmoil

Former UFC middleweight Jason Miller and current UFC contender Mark Munoz were once the closest of friends and training partners. At one time, they even went as far as to call each other brothers. The two trained side by side at Reign, Munoz’s gym in Lake Forrest, Calif., as they battled their way up the MMA ladder as UFC employees. Over the last few weeks, Miller, who goes by the moniker “Mayhem,” has found himself behind bars on more than one occasion – three to be exact. The charges seem to stem from a relationship with a female friend that has rapidly turned sour and cost Mayhem a good portion of his time, money, and perhaps his sanity as well.

Rampage Jackson Says There’s Always Been a Secret Rivalry with Tito Ortiz

Former UFC light heavyweight champions Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Tito Ortiz have been friends for over a decade. They’ve been training partners, and at one time, they said they would never fight each other. Times have changed. Their friendship is intact, but the two no longer train together and are going to fight. Ortiz and Jackson will headline Bellator MMA ’s first ever pay-per-view on Nov. 2, and Jackson says there’s always been a bit of a secret rivalry between the two. When Jackson was making his way up the ranks in Japan with the Pride organization, Ortiz was the reigning UFC 205-pound champion. The two began training together at Ortiz’ gym in California under the direction of Colin Oyama. “I trained with Tito for years and I can tell secretly there’s been a little competition between me and Tito. I remember when I first started training with him and Ricco Rodriguez, they used to kick my ass all the time and stuff like that.

UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre met with media during the UFC World Tour 2013 stop in Las Vegas on Monday. As he readies for his upcoming bout with Johny Hendricks at UFC 167, GSP talked about Saturday’s UFC on Fox 8 co-main event between his teammate and friend Rory MacDonald and Jake Ellenberger. MacDonald walked away with the victory against “The Juggernaut,” but questions lingered as to whether it warranted a future title shot. In this video shot by MMAWeekly staff writer Ryan McKinnell, St-Pierre also addresses the mounting pressure of a potential match-up between the two friends and training partners. With tonight’s UFC on FOX 8 welterweight co-headliner between Jake Ellenberger and Rory MacDonald being billed as a title eliminator, the UFC seemingly could have a problem on its hands since MacDonald and current UFC champion Georges St-Pierre are training partners. UFC President Dana White, though, scoffs at that notion. “I’m going to ask you a question,” White told “Inside MMA” reporter Ron Kruck on Friday. “[MacDonald] basically lives in Georges St-Pierre’s house, meaning he trains there in his training facility. It’s Business as Usual for Demetrious Johnson Heading into Second UFC Title Defense

Every fighter has his own unique way of preparing for a fight. Some scout their opponents and watch hours of video. Some bring in training partners to simulate their opponent’s style. UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson doesn’t do any of that. Johnson (17-2-1) was originally expected to face John Moraga on April 13, but a shoulder injury pushed back the bout to the UFC on Fox 8 fight card on July 27. Now healed, Johnson is ready for his second UFC title defense. “Recovery has gone great. Once I got cleared from a doctor to start training again, I started training,” Johnson said on a recent media conference call . “I’m feeling great; shoulder’s feeling 100-percent, and just ready to do work.” Moraga (13-1) is on a seven-fight winning streak and possesses solid wrestling and good boxing, but Johnson doesn’t feel that Moraga brings anything to the table that he hasn’t already faced. “My last fight I fought, I think he’s probably one of the guys in the division that has that one-strike knockout power where he drops guys, and you’ve seen him do it all the time. I’m speaking of John Dodson. John Moraga possesses great skills. He throws great combinations, but as far as me, when it comes to my training and preparing for fighters or fights, we don’t bring anybody in to emulate my opponent. We don’t go out and seek information on my opponent,” said Johnson. “We just train hard. I believe in my training partners and my coaching, and that’s what we’ve done and it hasn’t let us down yet.” Johnson doesn’t worry about what his opponent is going to do or what he does best. His only concern is becoming a better fighter.

The UFC is His Home, but Leonard Garcia Looking to a Legacy FC Takeover After Changing Camps

Suffering through a five-fight losing streak, former WEC/UFC featherweight Leonard Garcia recognizes what he’s been doing wrong. “I had a couple fights where I had been doing the same thing I’d done before and wasn’t moving forward with things I should have,” he said. “I was relying too much on landing the big punch.” Not only does he feel like he was doing the wrong thing in fights, but also in training, thus Garcia has been working with a new team. “I’ve had the same training partners for the last seven years and it kind of felt like going through the motions every camp,” Garcia told MMAWeekly.com. “I got complacent. “I’m going to out to Alpha Male and training with some of those guys: Duane Ludwig, Urijah Faber, Lance Palmer and all those guys. It’s really changed my game all over again.

Jacob Noe Looking to Rebound Against Babalu Sobral at Bellator 96

Having won nine fights heading into this past February’s match-up with Mikhail Zayats in the second round of Bellator’s light-heavyweight tournament, Jacob Noe was riding high, maybe too high for his own good. Following a first-round submission loss to Zayats, Noe decided it was time to leave his native Tennessee and make the kind of move necessary to take his career to the next level. “I think I underestimated the guy,” said Noe of his loss to Zayats. “I just went in there without a game plan and tried to fight him and I think it backfired. He had a really good game plan and coaching. I kind of learned my lesson from that. “In Memphis I was kind of the only full-time fighter and didn’t have consistent training partners or experience to work with, so I made the change to Team Syndicate in Las Vegas.” Noe felt the change was a long time coming and the Zayats fight only helped crystalize the need to shake things up. “I always knew that beforehand I wasn’t growing as a fighter and I felt like I needed to make a change,” he said
