Bo Nickal signs with Real American Freestyle in return to wrestling

Promotional officials told MMA Fighting that the UFC middleweight has signed with Real American Freestyle wrestling organization. Nickal plans to compete for Real American Freestyle while also continuing on his mixed martial arts journey.

Paulina Granados Heads into Legacy FC 23 as One of the Promotion’s Rising Stars

After a very successful amateur career, Texas 105-pound fighter Paulina “Firefox” Granados has kept rolling with two wins in two pro fights this year. She is looking to earn her third straight pro victory at Friday’s Legacy FC 23 show in San Antonio. According to Granados, the transition from amateur to pro has gone smoothly and has only required a few tweaks to her game. “Other than the nerves, it wasn’t any different,” she said.

WSOF 4′s Tyrone Spong finds transition between MMA, kickboxing ‘nothing special’

Just because they’re both combat sports doesn’t mean it should be easy for a kickboxer to give MMA a shot — and have relative ease picking the new sport up. But that’s pretty much how it worked for Tyrone Spong (1-0), who next month fights for just the second time in his pro MMA career – and carries the card for World Series of Fighting 4 as the main event against Angel DeAnda (11-2). Spong’s MMA debut in November at WSOF 1 was so impressive when he knocked out Travis Bartlett in the first round that he went straight to the top of the heap for the Las Vegas-based promotion. “I feel very special that they put me as the main event, and I think it’s also due to the fans,” Spong told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). “That card (in November), I wasn’t going to be on the main card – I was going to be on the undercard. But by the demand of the fans, I ended up on the main card. Now I’m in the main event

Legacy FC 21 Results: Leonard Garcia and Holly Holm Knockouts Highlight the Night

Matt Hobar and William “Bubba” Bush became new champions at Friday night’s Legacy FC 21 at the Arena Theater in Houston, but it was UFC veteran Leonard Garcia and world champion boxer Holly Holm that stole much of the night’s thunder. Hobar dominated his fight with Angel Huerta in the night’s main event, taking the fight to him. It didn’t take Hobar long to put Huerta on the mat and transition to his back, securing a fight-ending and title-winning rear naked choke. The victory put the Legacy bantamweight belt firmly around Hobar’s waist. Bush gave Larry Crowe little chance of becoming the promotion’s middleweight champion, putting him on the mat a couple of times in the first round.

UFC planning ‘Primetime’ specials for UFC 166, 167 and 168

The UFC’s popular “Primetime” series will return this fall and winter with regularity. Sources close to the promotion told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the UFC is planning to produce “UFC Primetime” shows for its final three pay-per-view cards of the year – UFC 166, UFC 167 and UFC 168. No formal announcement from the UFC has come yet for any of the three, but with the transition next month to FOX Sports 1 as its primary cable home, that new network is expected to broadcast the episodes. Broadcast dates and times are not yet known.

Robert Drysdale Octagon Debut Nixed, Out of UFC 163 Due to Staph Infection

Robert Drysdale will have to withdraw from his UFC 163 bout with Ednaldo Oliveira due to a staph infection, according to a report from the Las Vegas Review-Journal . Drysdale is one of the most decorated grapplers in the world. He is a World Jiu-Jitsu Championship gold medalist, as well as a winner of the Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling World Championship absolute division. He has quietly amassed a 6-0 record in professional mixed martial arts competition, since beginning his transition to the sport in 2010. Holding true to his background in grappling – and similar to UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey – Drysdale has submitted all six of his opponents and all in the first round. In fact, he has never gone longer than 2:54 in an MMA bout. Drysdale will, however, have to wait to make his UFC debut due to the staph infection. There has been no word from UFC officials yet on whether or not they have found a replacement to step in and face Oliveira or if they will scrap the bout altogether

On Saturday at UFC 162, Tim Kennedy makes his UFC debut after 12 years as a professional MMA fighter, including three in the now-defunct Strikeforce organization, where he once vied for the promotion’s middleweight belt. It’s long overdue, and yet Kennedy looks at the booking as bittersweet. And no, it’s got nothing to do with his fight purse . Although he’s fighting Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Roger Gracie (6-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) on the pay-per-view card’s swing bout, the always-outspoken Kennedy (15-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC) said he’d much rather be paired against a UFC veteran. Fighting in Strikeforce, he constantly was being compared to the middleweights in the industry-leader and asked about whether he measured up to the UFC roster. That’s because, especially for a guy who started off with all the buzz that comes from the pro wrestling-to-MMA transition, the heat of the spotlight has cooled considerably for Lashley in MMA. The man who once looked like he might become the next Brock Lesnar is now fighting on small shows like Saturday night’s Global Warrior Challenge event in Kansas City, Mo., where he’s not even the pay-per-view event’s headliner. What’s more, he’s small-timing it on purpose. Cortney Casey Believes Soccer Gives Here Cardio Edge Heading into Pro MMA Debut at XFC 24

Having achieved success in the sport of soccer at the University of Texas El Paso, Cortney “Cast Iron” Casey is looking to continue to move forward in her athletic career, this time in MMA. Having compiled a 6-2 amateur record, with two championships to show for her efforts, Casey will be making her pro debut on Friday at XFC 24 . When asked why now is the time to make the move to pro, Casey responded, “I just felt like it was time to step up in competition again, moving up to Tuff-N-Uff (as an amateur) and now to the XFC (as a pro). “My manager and coaches felt it was time for me to move up as well. I can only get better as the competition gets harder and this is a way to do that.” Casey feels her time in the amateurs was invaluable and helped her develop her game to the point where she was able to transition naturally between skillsets. “I feel like I definitely improved my overall game and put everything together,” she said. “It wasn’t just stand-up then Jiu-Jitsu, it was more of a flowing game.
