With final three females released, Bellator issues statement on women’s division

Bellator MMA hasn’t officially dissolved its women’s division. But with no women left on its roster, there may not be a home for those fighters in the promotion any time soon. Word got out on Tuesday that Jessica Eye (10-1) had been let go by Bellator, and Tuesday also saw an announcement from all-female promotion Invicta Fighting Championship that former Bellator fighter Felice Herrig (9-4) had signed. Jessica Aguilar (15-4) most recently fought for Bellator in March. Those three were the last remaining women on Bellator’s roster, and on Tuesday night promotion CEO Bjorn Rebney issued a statement on the state of the California-based company’s women’s division. “Jessica Eye, Jessica Aguilar and Felice represent all that is good in women’s MMA,” Rebney stated. ”Both Eye and Aguilar are ranked No. 1 in the world in their respective divisions and carry themselves with class and distinction elevating the women’s game. I’ve said many times that fighters need to fight and fight often. Given our current focus, we are not in position to provide these very deserving women regular and reoccurring fights on a large platform. And, I felt it was best to let them go and secure options that did. I genuinely wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors and will be rooting for each of them wherever they fight.” For Herrig, a strawweight, that opportunity will now come with Invicta. Aguilar, who went 5-1 as a strawweight for Bellator, and is on a six-fight win streak, may have to look Invicta’s direction, as well

Fresh off of a victory at the recent UFC on Fox 8 in Seattle, Melvin Guillard has agreed to step into the UFC Fight Night: Bisping vs. Munoz co-main event to square off with Ross Pearson . The bout was announced on UFC Tonight on Tuesday night. UFC Fight Night: Bisping vs. Munoz will be the first live UFC event on Fox Sports 2, which is a re-branding of Fuel TV that launches alongside Fox Sports 1 on Aug.

No Clear Date or Event, Demian Maia and Jake Shields Agree to UFC Welterweight Showdown

Brazilian welterweight Demian Maia was supposed to be fighting on this weekend’s UFC 163: Aldo vs. Korean Zombie fight card in Rio de Janeiro, but had the fight yanked out from under him when Josh Koscheck withdrew due to injury. Although Maia was pulled from the fight card altogether, he already has another opponent lined up. Maia will next face Jake Shields , according to a report on UFC Tonight on Tuesday night. There were few details available as to when or where the two would meet, but both fighters have reportedly agreed to the bout.

Jorge Masvidal vs. Rustam Khabilov set for November UFC on FOX Sports 1 card

That didn’t take long. Jorge Masvidal moved to 2-0 in the UFC on Saturday, and he’s already got his next assignment. Masvidal (25-7 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has been booked for a lightweight fight against Rustam Khabilov (16-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC). FUEL TV’s “UFC Tonight” correspondent Ariel Helwani reported the news as part of Tuesday night’s episode. The fight reportedly will take place in November on a yet-to-be-announced FOX Sports 1 card. Masvidal this past Saturday submitted Michael Chiesa in the second round at UFC on FOX 8, which took place at KeyArena in Seattle. Despite a rough first round in which Masvidal was dropped by a Chiesa left hand, he went on to hand Chiesa his first career loss with a guillotine D’Arce choke. Masvidal, a former lightweight title challenger in Strikeforce, now has won three straight since his loss to Gilbert Melendez for that belt in December 2011.

Brian Stann replaces Joe Rogan for UFC 163 color commentator duties in Brazil

It certainly isn’t taking Brian Stann long to find work in his post-fighting career. Stann, who earlier this month announced his retirement from fighting to concentrate on his family and his broadcasting career, will replace the UFC’s regular analyst, Joe Rogan, in the booth at UFC 163. UFC 163 takes place Aug. 3 at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janerio, and Stann, a former UFC middleweight and ex-WEC champion, will work with regular play-by-play voice Mike Goldberg on the call. The news was announced on Tuesday night’s edition of “UFC Tonight” on FUEL TV. Stann (12-6 MMA, 6-5 UFC) decided to call it quits earlier this year after a “Fight of the Night” loss to Wanderlei Silva in March in Japan

Chael Sonnen Signs New UFC Contract, Intends to Drop Back to Middleweight After Shogun

Chael Sonnen has a light heavyweight bout on tap with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC Fight Night 26 in Boston, but after that, he’s headed back to middleweight. Sonnen moved up to light heavyweight to coach opposite Jon Jones on The Ultimate Fighter and then challenge him for his belt at UFC 159. Sonnen failed in his attempt to win the title, but agreed to another bout at 205 pounds to help launch the new Fox Sports 1 network on Aug. 17. After that, with a new contract in hand, he’ll be dropping back down to middleweight. “I’ll return to middleweight after beating Shogun,” said Sonnen on Tuesday night’s edition of UFC Tonight .

Less than three weeks after pulling off an upset in his UFC debut, Brian Melancon knows when he’ll be going back to work. Melancon (7-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) will step in for the injured Paulo Thiago (15-5 MMA, 5-5 UFC) to meet Kevin Gastelum (6-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) in a welterweight bout at UFC Fight Night 27 next month. The news comes from Tuesday night’s edition of FUEL TV’s “UFC Tonight.” UFC Fight Night 27 (formerly UFC on FOX Sports 1 2) takes place Aug. 28 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
