TUF 18 Finale medical suspensions: Pena, Corassani among several with potentially lengthy terms

After taking an illegal knee to the face against Maximo Blanco , Akira Corassani will be on the shelf for as much as six months. Corassani was shut down by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for a lengthy term – though the featherweight fighter can return earlier than that if his broken nose is cleared by a doctor. Even with the early clearance, though, Corassani will be shut down for two months. MMAjunkie on Monday requested and received a list of the medical suspensions from this past Saturday’s TUF 18 Finale event, which took place at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS – Saturday night’s TUF 18 Finale event drew an announced attendance of 4,346 and a live gate of $322,742.50. UFC President Dana White announced the figures at the night’s post-event news conference, which MMAjunkie attended. The TUF 18 Finale took place at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas and featured a lightweight bout between former title challengers Gray Maynard and Nate Diaz in the FOX Sports 1-televised headliner. Diaz tore through Maynard on the feet en route to a first-round TKO victory. In addition, Julianna Pena won the first women’s “Ultimate Fighter,” and Chris Holdsworth won the men’s bantamweight tournament for Season 18 of the FOX Sports 1-broadcast reality competition

LAS VEGAS – Nate Diaz and Chris Holdsworth each earned $50,000 bonuses for their performances at Saturday’s TUF 18 Finale event, but it was Ryan Benoit , in a losing effort, who will take home $100,000. Diaz earned the “Knockout of the Night,” Holdsworth won “Submission of the Night” and Benoit picked up “Fight of the Night” honors for his loss to Joshua Sampo .

After charging across the cage and getting right in Jessica Rakoczy ’s face, Pena took the fight to the mat, got full mount, and unleashed a barrage of punches and elbows that forced referee Mario Yamasaki to step in and stop the bout at 4:59 of the first round. The “TUF 18″ women’s bantamweight final bout was the co-main event of today’s TUF 18 Finale event at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. LAS VEGAS – Chris Holdsworth took advantage of an opportunity against Davey Grant , and it paid off in a major way. After landing a kick in the second round, Holdsworth was able to bring the fight to the ground when Grant missed a choke attempt. From there, Holdsworth went after a choke of his own, cinched it up and forced Grant to tap to win the men’s bantamweight tourney and become a Season 18 “Ultimate Fighter” winner. The “TUF 18″ men’s bantamweight final bout was part of the main card of today’s TUF 18 Finale event at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and MMAjunkie.
