UFC 328 takes place on May 9 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

UFC pioneer dies aged 60

It’s an emotional day in the mixed martial arts world as we say goodbye to one of the UFC’s pioneers . The UFC is approaching its 31st anniversary in the business and throughout that time, the promotion has accumulated numerous stars. Fans are often sad to see their favorite fighters bow out of the sport, but the news of a former competitor passing away is much worse. Art Jimmerson was 60 years old when his death was announced to the world. Jimmerson was well known for competing at the inaugral UFC 1 event, where he sported a single boxing glove on his left hand–ultimately earning him the nickname ‘One Glove’

UFC 295 marked the 30th anniversary of the promotion. Over three decades, the UFC – and the sport of MMA as a whole – has evolved tremendously. If evidence is needed, go back and watch the promotion’s first event ever – which is now available in full, for free. UFC 1 took place Nov. 12, 1993, at McNichols Sports Arena in Denver with a reported 7,800 fans in attendance. The one-night tournament-style fight card filled with openweight matchups featured eight fights.

To those who bought the pay-per-view and took the ride on Nov. 12, 1993, it must have seemed like a wild gamble. Here was this brand new event, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, which claimed that it would deliver “no rules” fights between a hodgepodge of various martial arts masters until only one champion remained. Also the fights would take place in an eight-sided cage, and football great Jim Brown would be there for some reason, so why not call up your cable company (pretty much the only way to order a pay-per-view event back then) and take your chances? Still, savvy viewers must have had questions.

ESPN’s ’30 for 30′ podcast about UFC 1 makes an old story feel new

It sounds like a tale you already know, or at least think you know: the origin story of the UFC. And chances are you have heard it before, in several different ways and from a variety of sources, but maybe never quite like this. As much as I enjoy the ESPN “30 for 30” series, I can’t say I had high expectations for the podcast episode “No Rules – The Birth of the UFC.” It just felt like subject matter I was already too familiar with, plus the old-school hardcore fan in me always feels like the more mainstream the media outlet, the more likely they are to screw up something important when it comes to MMA and its history. Royce Gracie at UFC 1. I was very pleased to find out how wrong I was this time. The podcast, produced by Chris Berube of Pineapple Street Media , does an impressive job of telling the story of the UFC’s inception and its first event in a way that feels detailed and comprehensive, but also novel.
