Thirteen years ago, a former UFC champion made his final walk to the octagon. At UFC 141 in 2011, Alistair Overeem stopped former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar in a main event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The event’s poster touted the size of both men: Lesnar standing at 6-foot-3, 265 pounds, and Overeem 6-foot-5, 256 pounds. Needless to say, the fight wasn’t expected to last long, and it didn’t. Overeem quickly took control of the center of the octagon, and patiently waited for Lesnar to present an opening

UFC 279 free fight: Nate Diaz flips off, beats up Donald Cerrone

The bout was the co-main event to Alistair Overeem’s TKO of Brock Lesnar , as part of a card that took place Dec. 30, 2011 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The bad blood was evident from the moment the pre-fight promotion began. At a pre-fight ceremonial faceoff, Diaz infamously smacked Cerrone’s cowboy hat off and shoved him. When it came time to fight, the respect level continued its flatline

One of the most feared strikers in MMA history returns this week looking to stay on the upswing. Alistair Overeem (44-17 MMA, 9-6 UFC) heads to Russia for a fight for the first time since 2002 when he takes on Aleksei Oleinik (57-11-1 MMA, 6-2 UFC) in the UFC on ESPN+ 7 main event Saturday at Yubileyniy Arena in St. Petersburg. The card streams on ESPN+. After back-to-back knockout losses to Francis Ngannou and Curtis Blaydes, former title challenger Overeem got back on track this past November in China with a first-round TKO of Sergey Pavlovich.

At 1-3 his past four fights with three knockout losses, Overeem is badly in need of a win this week at UFC on FOX 13, where he meets fellow heavyweight Stefan Struve. Most analysts would say Overeem hasn’t looked like the world-beater he was knock as in his Strikeforce days since late 2011. That’s when he made his UFC debut at UFC 141 against former heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar in a title eliminator. And that’s when he dismantled Lesnar with vicious kicks and knees to the body in the first round. Since then, he had a suspension for elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone levels that took him out of a title fight against then-champ Junior Dos Santos.
