And “Fight of the Night” winners Abel Trujillo and Jamie Varner took some major shots earlier this month on the Super Bowl weekend pay-per-view. Training with Brazilian ‘brother’ ‘Jacare’ Souza helped Alan Patrick to UFC 169 win

Alan Patrick was missing a key collaborator in his corner a week ago at UFC 169, but it didn’t matter. He still came out on top. Patrick’s mentor, Ronaldo Souza, didn’t make the trip to Newark, N.J., because he was prepping for his own fight, which takes place this week in Brazil. But Patrick (12-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) said he was able to get by without “Jacare” with him against John Makdessi (12-3 MMA, 5-3 UFC) en route to a unanimous decision win. “I didn’t miss Jacare’s physical presence because I always feel him with me,” Patrick told MMAjunkie.

UFC’s John Lineker sticking with flyweight, pledges to figure out weight-cut issues

The bad training camp that UFC bantamweight Urijah Faber referred to in the wake of his UFC 169 loss to champion Renan Barao was the result of short notice and multiple injuries, his manager today told MMAjunkie. Mike Roberts of MMA Incorporated said Faber spent one-third of his camp cutting weight for the title fight and was twice injured during his preparation. “All he did for those three weeks was he sparred once and got hurt and hit mitts for the rest of the three weeks,” Roberts said. “That’s a great workout, but the only way you get your timing down is through sparring.” Faber (30-7 MMA, 6-3 UFC) lost by first-round TKO to Barao (32-1 MMA, 7-0 UFC) in the headliner of this past Saturday’s pay-per-view event in Newark, N.J., when he fell to his knees after being rocked by a punch

UFC flyweight Ali Bagautinov carries Olympic torch in Russia

Just days after picking up his third win in the UFC, Ali Bagautinov was back home in his motherland for a once-in-a-lifetime honor. Bagautinov, from the Russian republic of Dagestan, got to carry the Olympic torch ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, which open this week in Sochi, Russia. Bagautinov posted a picture of himself with the torch on his Instagram feed. The Olympic torch relay takes place for both the summer and winter Games and starts in Greece, the home of the Olympics. The torch then travels around the world to the site of the Games
