Trying to get back in the win column after an upset loss to Robbie Lawler, MacDonald found himself in trouble early against Maia. But he battled back to take a unanimous decision in a “Fight of the Night” winner in Las Vegas.

But even though the prelims had six decisions in seven fights, there were still plenty of gloriously brutal punches and kicks. White on UFC 170: Regardless of PPV numbers, ‘it’s still the biggest women’s fight ever’

MMA observers might never know how effective an Olympic-tinged promo was for UFC 170, but according to UFC President Dana White, the recent event should be considered a success for women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey , who worried about pay-per-view numbers. “If we did (just) 750 pay-per-view buys, it’s still the biggest women’s fight ever,” he said following this past Saturday’s event, which took place at Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay Events Center. “And this gate is still a quarter-million dollars bigger than her last (headlining) gate.” UFC 170 took in a reported $1.5 million at the box office , the promotion announced after the event. The privately-owned promotion doesn’t publicly disclose PPV numbers

UFC 170 medical suspensions: MacDonald, Assuncao among those with potential long terms

A dozen fighters were given medical suspensions following their bouts at this past Saturday’s UFC 170. Five of them could be out as long as six months. MMAjunkie received the list of suspended fighters from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which oversaw Saturday’s card at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

After UFC 170 destruction of Cummins, Daniel Cormier to keep weight off, stay ready

Following his first win at light heavyweight after an unbeaten career at heavyweight, Daniel Cormier isn’t planning on bulking up now that the first one is out of the way. With the possible exception of a Sunday post-fight celebration courtesy of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Cormier is planning to stay as close to his new light heavyweight limit as he can. After all, he’d like to be ready if any 205-pounders at the top of the food chain need a replacement opponent. Cormier (14-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) on Saturday tore through short-notice opponent Patrick Cummins (4-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) with a 79-second TKO in the co-main event of UFC 170.

After extending his UFC win streak, Raphael Assuncao positioning himself for title shot

Since getting knocked out by Erik Koch in his UFC debut, Raphael Assuncao has quietly built one of the UFC’s most impressive win streaks. The Brazilian bantamweight has won six straight in the octagon, including a dominant decision over highly touted prospect Pedro Munhoz at this past Saturday’s UFC 170. Most fighters with a similar run would be in the running for a title shot, if not already awarded one. Yet the 31-year-old fighter continues to fight opponents with little to no name value. Even after a split call over T.J. Dillashaw, who works with the highly regarded Team Alpha Male, Assuncao (22-4 MMA, 6-1 UFC) was paired with Munhoz (10-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC), who despite his promise was a UFC newcomer.
