For too long, our writers’ hyper-specific arguments have been confined to the private corridors of the Internet. Welcome to The List, where we take their instant message bickerings, add a little polish, and make them public. Today, in the wake of Conor McGregor’s lost to Nate Diaz (and some subsequent justifications for the defeat), we look at the best post-loss excuses in MMA history. * * * * Tito Ortiz, because he’s pretty much written the book on MMA excuses Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin Steven Marrocco : If we’re even going to talk about excuses, we have to go to the very source of dubious explanations post-fight and otherwise, the reason we cringe and sharpen our Internet pitchforks when a fighter begins a sentence with, “I don’t want to make excuses.” At this point, I don’t think Tito Ortiz even attempts to use that softener when, after just about every single fight, he details the injuries he sustained before he stepped into the cage. If not for the syntactic surprises, an Ortiz press conference is easily scriptable. It goes a little something like this: “I came into this camp with a broken (insert malady here), but I overcame it with my heart and will and determination, and I doubt you all could do the same if you’d been through as many surgeries as me, my back, I do this for the fans, Punishment Athletics, out.” We’ve seen these over the past six or seven years of Ortiz’s career, to the point where we can’t begin to take them seriously.

UFC 171 took place March 15 in Dallas, where Johny Hendricks won the vacant welterweight title with a narrow win over Robbie Lawler . The fight nearly was derailed at the weigh-ins after Hendricks initially came in heavy. White’s vlog shows Hendricks’ efforts to make weight within the two-hour limit – and his celebration once he did.

When Leone was hugging a leg of a single-leg takedown attempt, the champion stepped over to the back and immediately went to work. Johny Hendricks targets fall return, wants division to move forward in absence

UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks will be on the mend until the latter portion of this year, but while he recovers from a recent bicep surgery, “Bigg Rigg” would like to see the contenders narrow in a crowded division. “How many people are claiming they deserve a shot at me?” I’ll be out for a little bit longer, so I would like to have them all fight one more time,” Hendricks told MMAjunkie. In the current 170-pound landscape, the likes of Tyron Woodley, Hector Lombard, Rory MacDonald, Matt Brown, Nick Diaz and Robbie Lawler could all have legitimate claims as the next opponent for Hendricks (16-2 MMA, 11-2 UFC). From the champ’s perspective, though, he believes there should be no doubt surrounding who holds No. 1 contender status, much like when he climbed to the top.

UFC 171 winner Robert Whiteford making best of 15 minutes with Pineda

After just about any decision victory, it can be reasonably counted on that an utterance of “I was hoping to finish, but …” is not far behind. The same can be said for Robert Whiteford . But after the Scotsman’s 15-minute win over Daniel Pineda at UFC 171 earlier this month, he’s using the decision to build up his confidence. Whiteford (11-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) picked up his first UFC victory against Pineda (18-11 MMA, 3-4 UFC) in Dallas – and it came after he thought for sure he was on his way to a finish.

Initial injury diagnosis confirmed for Carlos Condit, who needs knee surgery

Carlos Condit ‘s preliminary diagnosis of a partially torn meniscus and possible torn ACL was recently confirmed by a follow-up exam, according to a rep from his camp. Greg Jackson today confirmed to MMAjunkie that the onetime welterweight title challenger will need surgery, but hasn’t decided when and where he’ll complete the procedure. MMAjunkie first reported Condit’s preliminary diagnosis following his injury TKO loss to Tyron Woodley (13-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) at this past Saturday’s UFC 171 in Dallas

UFC champ Johny Hendricks to undergo surgery next week for torn bicep

Newly minted UFC welterweight champ Johny Hendricks (16-2 MMA, 11-2 UFC) is expected to undergo surgery next week for a torn bicep he suffered prior to his title-winning bout against Robbie Lawler (22-10 MMA, 7-4 UFC), and he could be sidelined between two and three months. Hendricks today told Los Angeles radio station KROQ that he sustained the bicep injury less than two weeks prior to his headliner at UFC 171, which took place this past Saturday in Dallas, and also suffered a fractured shin in the first round of his title fight. His longtime manager, Ted Erhardt, confirmed the injuries and expected recovery window to MMAjunkie. In an interview Monday with MMAFighting.com , Hendricks said he suffered an elbow injury and contemplated backing out prior to the grueling five-round pay-per-view fight.
