In UFC 179’s headliner in Rio de Janeiro, Aldo notched his seventh title defense with a victory over game challenger Mendes, who helped produce “Fight of the Night” honors for both.

UFC 179 drug tests come back clean

Chad Mendes and Jose Aldo The Comissao Atletica Brasileira de MMA (CABMMA) today announced that drug tests for UFC 179 came back clean. In a prepared statement obtained by MMAjunkie, CABMMA said all competitors were tested for performance-enhancers and drugs of abuse. Additionally, the event’s main and co-main event bouts – featherweight champ Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes and Phil Davis vs. Glover Teixeira, respectively – were tested for human growth-hormone and erythropoietin (EPO).

After UFC 179, featherweight division includes king, prince and joker

(This story appears in today’s edition of USA TODAY .) As far as champion Jose Aldo is concerned, the pecking order in the UFC’s featherweight division has now been clearly established. “I think the court is complete,” Aldo said after successfully defending his title in a rematch with top contender Chad Mendes at UFC 179 in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night. “I’m the king, Chad’s the prince, and now we have a joker.” That last jab was a not-so subtle reference to Conor McGregor , the would-be featherweight contender who’s made as much of an impact with his mouth as with his fists in his short time with the UFC. But if Aldo thinks his underlings will be content to accept their assigned positions at court without protest, he’s in for a surprise. The good news is, the coming upheaval is likely to make for an entertaining game of musical chairs as the UFC’s 145-pound class threatens to become the most competitive and compelling division in the organization. Things are only going to heat up in November as four different top-10 featherweights square off on two separate fight cards to whittle the field of challengers down to a more manageable sum.

Filed under: News , UFC , Videos Wondering if UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva is still a top star, especially in his native Brazil? The MMA great made it clear this past weekend at UFC 179. At Saturday’s event at Maracanazinho Gymnasium in Rio de Janeiro, the lights dimmed and the crowd erupted as Silva emerged from backstage – simply to walk to his cageside seats to watch the pay-per-view card. Silva (33-6 MMA, 16-2 UFC) has been out of action since suffering a broken leg in a December 2013 loss to middleweight champ Chris Weidman.

UFC President Dana White may not read the Internet, as he often says, but for a majority of the MMA community, the sport lives and breaths through websites, forums and, perhaps most importantly, social media. Fighters interact with fans, each other and many more through the likes of Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, which helps outsiders get a deeper look into the minds of the athletes. Following Saturday’s UFC 179 pay-per-view event in Rio de Janeiro, several of the winning and losing fighters, along with their coaches, training partners or family members, took to social media to react to the event or share a message with supporters. Check out some of those reactions. * * * * The defeated “Although I didn’t get the win , and gilbert did get a sweet ass armbar, I know my holes and I promise u I will be back a different Christos, more improved in every way.
