But she looked outstanding when she put away Ashlee Evans-Smith at UFC 181 in December, putting her opponent to sleep with a sick bulldog choke in Las Vegas. This week, Pennington (5-4 MMA, 2-1 UFC) is elevated to co-main event status in a hurry in her UFC career when she meets the heavily hyped and unbeaten former pro boxer Holly Holm (7-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) at UFC 184. Ashlee Evans-Smith LAS VEGAS – The Nevada State Athletic Commission today voted unanimously to suspend and fine Ashlee Evans-Smith for failing a drug test following December’s UFC 181 event. Evans-Smith (3-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) is suspended nine months and fined 30 percent of her $8,000 purse, which amounts to $2,400. She must also provide a clean drug test when she reapplies for a fight license in Nevada. Her loss to Raquel Pennington (5-4 MMA, 2-1 UFC), which came via first-round bulldog choke , is unchanged. UFC 181 took place Dec. 6 at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena

NSAC issues temporary suspensions to Silva, Diaz and Lombard; Evans-Smith suspended

Nick DIaz In an expected move, the Nevada State Athletic Commission today issued temporary suspensions to Anderson Silva , Nick Diaz and Hector Lombard in the wake of their recent failed drug tests. Additionally, Ashlee Evans-Smith was suspended and fined following a drug-testing failure of her own.

NSAC delays Francisco Rivera appeal until February

Francisco Rivera and Urijah Faber UFC bantamweight Francisco Rivera will have to wait at least one more month before he finds out whether the Nevada State Athletic Commission will overturn his December loss to Urijah Faber. NSAC officials today declined to hear Rivera’s argument until the could more clearly establish jurisdiction in the matter based on recommendations from the Nevada Attorney General’s office. Additionally, the commission members recommended both Faber and referee Mario Yamasaki, who oversaw the contest, be asked to appear at the rescheduled hearing. Rivera (10-4 MMA, 3-3 UFC) was submitted by Faber (32-7 MMA, 8-3 UFC) in the second round of their UFC 181 content after he was clearly poked in the eye , which is a foul under the commission’s rules. Yamasaki did not catch the infraction despite verbal and physical cues from Rivera that he was fouled, so the bout was not stopped and Faber applied a bulldog choke

On Thursday, the NSAC confirmed to MMAjunkie the banned substance they allege Evans-Smith (3-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) tested positive for in the wake of her UFC 181 appearance opposite Raquel Pennington (5-4 MMA, 2-1 UFC), who choked her unconscious with a bulldog choke on the event’s preliminary card. Ashlee Evans-Smith Manager Mike McLeish first learned that his client, Ashlee Evans-Smith (3-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC), had failed a drug test when a UFC executive called him. He’s still waiting to hear from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which oversaw Evans-Smith’s fight against Raquel Pennington (5-4 MMA, 2-1 UFC) at this past month’s UFC 181. “We have no idea what they’re talking about,” he told MMAjunkie. McLeish said UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby called this past week to report the commission allegedly found a diuretic in Evans-Smith’s system following her fight, which ended in a first-round submission loss. (MMAjunkie could not reach Shelby for comment, as UFC executives are typically not authorized to give public statements to the media.)
