On this date in MMA history, a pair of legends finally met in the cage – and it wound up not even counting. Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva met former Strikeforce champ Nick Diaz in the UFC 183 main event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The fight was a crucial one for Silva, who was returning for the first time since his gruesome leg break against Chris Weidman at UFC 168 13 months prior. Diaz was back after signing a new contract with the UFC. Diaz trash-talked Silva quickly into the fight.

Six years ago today, Nick Diaz stood outside the Grant Sawyer State Office Building in Las Vegas, moments after he was told he wouldn’t be fighting again for five years. Truthfully, I didn’t ever expect him to speak to reporters – myself included – after the Nevada State Athletic Commission delivered its draconian ruling , suspending one of the sport’s biggest stars for what seemed an absolutely absurd amount of time simply for testing positive for marijuana following his UFC 183 clash with Anderson Silva. Oh, and let’s not forget the accompanying $165,000 fine

Filed under: Featured , Featured Videos , News , UFC , Videos The Nevada State Athletic Commission today moved quickly to approve a settlement with suspended UFC welterweight Nick Diaz , voting unanimously to reduce the onetime title challenger’s five-year suspension to 18 months with a $100,000 fine. Diaz’s suspension runs retroactively to his Jan. 31, 2015 fight with Anderson Silva at UFC 183, which produced the positive test that resulted in his third suspension with the NSAC. He is eligible to fight Aug.

In September the Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended Diaz for five years and fined him $165,000 for failing a third drug test in the state. All three of his infractions have been for marijuana, most recently following his UFC 183 loss to Anderson Silva in January. ( Silva failed tests for steroids at the same event and was suspended for one year, and the official result is now a no-decision.) However, there are serious doubts about the accuracy of Diaz’s latest test

After UFC welterweight Nick Diaz was given a five-year suspension for a third failed drug test in Nevada for marijuana, Rousey, the UFC’s women’s bantamweight champion, unloaded on the Nevada State Athletic Commission at a pre-fight news conference for next month’s UFC 193 in Australia, which she headlines. Tuesday at her home gym in California, she reiterated her thoughts on her friend and sometime training partner’s punishment, comparing it to getting a life prison sentence for unpaid parking tickets. “You know what it reminds me of? It reminds me of, say you got a parking ticket, and you didn’t pay for it, and then you got another parking ticket and you didn’t pay for it … no matter how many parking tickets, no matter how long you don’t pay for it, you never deserve life in prison,” Rousey said at a media day at Glendale Fighting Club.

Fan starts GoFundMe campaign to raise money for Nick Diaz’s $165,000 NSAC fine

Filed under: Featured , News , UFC , Videos With Nick Diaz ’s White House petition hitting its required mark , another fan is tackling his fines from a five-year Nevada State Athletic Commission suspension. Late Thursday night, Butch Carroll started a GoFundMe page to help Diaz pay a $165,000 fine that represented 33 percent of a $500,000 “show” purse he received to fight Anderson Silva at UFC 183. A post-fight drug test revealed marijuana metabolites, his third such offense while fighting in Nevada. There’s no word on whether donations will go to cover court costs imposed on Diaz by the NSAC. “In the event his fine is dropped or reduced the unused funds will be donated to charity,” Carroll, of Salinas, Calif., wrote. As of Friday morning, no donations had been made.

Cher Currently suspended UFC welterweight Nick Diaz continues to garner support, this time from a seemingly unexpected source. Iconic singer and actress Cher today tweeted in support of Diaz, whom the Nevada State Athletic Commission recently suspended for five years following his latest failed drug test due to marijuana, to her nearly 3 million followers: Lift the NSAC ban from MMA fighter Nick Diaz. http://t.co/E5h1HYkKVu — Cher (@cher) October 5, 2015 It’s not clear if the 69-year-old Californian has any real ties to Diaz, but Cher included a link to a White House petition in support of the fighter. MMAjunkie’s Ben Fowlkes recently wrote about that campaign and the petition , which has garnered nearly 70,000 signatures – 30,000 short of the 100,000 needed – as of this morning
