It’s strange to think about now, but Amanda Nunes basically was an afterthought heading into UFC 207 on December 30, 2016. Yes, Nunes was the women’s bantamweight champion, making her first title defense after dominating Miesha Tate. But the focus leading up to UFC 207 was squarely on her opponent, Ronda Rousey . Rousey – who, along with Liz Carmouche, was the first woman to compete in the UFC on Feb. 23, 2013 – was an absolute force for two-plus years, racking up six consecutive title defenses and becoming one of the biggest stars the promotion’s ever had. She was a media darling, doing what few MMA fighters can by crossing over into the mainstream in a major way.

Former fighter-turned-coach Thomas helped Amanda Nunes ahead of her first UFC bantamweight title defense against Ronda Rousey in 2016. Nunes (19-4 MMA, 12-1 UFC) was the betting underdog going into the fight, which baffled Thomas, considering the amount of holes he saw in Rousey’s striking game. It didn’t take long for Nunes to fully capitalize on them, as she unleashed a barrage of punches to finish Rousey in just 48 seconds at UFC 207. It was a proud moment for Thomas, who saw the shortcomings in Rousey’s game that so many others had not prior to her stunning loss to Holly Holm one year earlier

Her attempt to regain the women’s bantamweight title she lost to Holly Holm by dramatic knockout at in November 2015 was badly thwarted by Nunes, who scored the win in less than a minute and delivered Rousey her second straight loss. After starting her career on a 12-fight winning streak and earning superstar status, Rousey’s fall from grace has been swift. Longtime UFC color commentator Rogan hyped Rousey as much as anyone during her peak, but even he now has doubts about whether “Rowdy” should attempt another comeback.
