Leave it to MMA fans to introduce Dewey Cooper to a new and entirely unpleasant experience in combat sports. Cooper, a 30-year combat sports veteran in kickboxing and MMA, had barely stepped away from the octagon after Francis Ngannou ’s failed bid for Stipe Miocic’s heavyweight title this past January when the messages started pouring in on his Instagram account. Some were of the usual variety employed by trolls. The death threats, he’d never seen before. UFC 220 featured two huge title fights in the main and co-main events, and their significance was reflected in the salary disbursements. Heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic , light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier , and challengers Francis Ngannou and Volkan Oezdemir combined for $1,950,000, which accounted for more than 76 percent of the money earned by the 22 fighters on the card. Don’t expect to see Francis Ngannou back in the octagon anytime soon after falling short of claiming the heavyweight title at UFC 220. After making a rapid ascent up the UFC heavyweight ranks, Ngannou (11-2 MMA, 6-1 UFC) was handily outclassed by Stipe Miocic (18-2 MMA, 12-2 UFC) in UFC 220’s main event on Jan. 20 at TD Garden in Boston. “The Predator” suffered his first octagon setback in the form of a one-sided unanimous decision , and along with it came criticism of his preparedness .

USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA rankings, Jan. 24: Cormier, Miocic drop McGregor in pound-for-pound list

Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic took care of business in dominant fashion at this past weekend’s UFC 220, and that is reflected in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA pound-for-pound rankings. Cormier (20-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC) retained the light heavyweight title with what proved to be a dominant win over upstart challenger Volkan Oezdemir, pounding him out for a second-round TKO . Miocic (18-2 MMA, 12-2 UFC), meanwhile, came back from a slugfest of a first round to out-class Ngannou for a unanimous decision to retain the heavyweight crown, with all three judges scoring it 50-44 in his favor. As a result, Cormier and Miocic have climbed to Nos. 3 and 4, respectively, in the pound-for-pound rankings, leapfrogging UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, who falls from 3 to 5. McGregor hasn’t fough in MMA since winning his belt in November 2016.

BOSTON – UFC middleweight contender Kelvin Gastelum expected his knockout of ex-champ Michael Bisping to get him a fight with Yoel Romero – for a title eliminator. Instead, Romero (12-2 MMA, 8-1 UFC) is getting a shot at the interim title against Luke Rockhold (16-3 MMA, 6-2 UFC), and that has Gastelum feeling snubbed. “It does bother me a little bit that I haven’t even been considered for a shot, but it is what it is,” Gastelum (14-3 MMA, 9-3 UFC) said backstage at this past Saturday’s UFC 220.
