Henry Cejudo may boast a lot of gold, but he surprisingly doesn’t include himself in his personal MMA Mount Rushmore. Cejudo (16-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC), the former UFC bantamweight and flyweight champion and Olympic wrestling gold medalist, is always happy to flaunt his accolades, but when speaking of MMA’s most accomplished fighters, he didn’t hesitate to include a former foe. “I’m not even part of the GOAT mountain to be quite honest with you, Cejudo said in an interview with Helen Yee .

It’s true: Israel Adesanya ’s unanimous decision victory over Yoel Romero at UFC 248 last Saturday won’t be remembered as the most thrilling main event in UFC history. But here’s another truth: Every great champion had a fight or two along the way which doesn’t rate among their classics. Anderson Silva is rightfully remembered for his sensational wins over the likes of Chael Sonnen and Vitor Belfort, but his victories over Patrick Cote and Demian Maia are not often found on his highlight reels. Likewise, Adesanya didn’t put on a show against Romero in his first defense of the middleweight title. He did, however, put on a smart display when presented with an opponent who seemed mainly interested in covering up and not doing much else.

UFC bantamweight contender Petr Yan sidelined after elbow surgery

Yan (13-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) has fought and won under the UFC banner five times since his first octagon appearance in June 2018. He is coming off a unanimous-decision victory over Jimmie Rivera at UFC 238 earlier this month in a performance made all the more impressive by the fact he wasn’t at 100 percent. A case of synovitis (inflammation of the synovial membrane) in the left elbow caused the bantamweight contender to have surgery this week, MMA Junkie confirmed with Yan’s manager, Daniel Rubenstein. The recovery timeline after the procedure is expected at four to six weeks, Rubenstein said.

UFC champ Henry Cejudo undergoes shoulder surgery, out for rest of year

Two-division UFC champion Henry Cejudo has undergone surgery and will likely be out of action the rest of this year, according to a report from ESPN.com . Cejudo (15-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC) tore the subscapularis muscle in his shoulder, which is a part of the rotator cuff, in the first round of his title-winning fight against Marlon Moraes earlier this month at UFC 238. Cejudo’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, told MMA Junkie the recovery process will sideline him for five to six months, meaning he’s done fighting for the rest of the year. Medical suspensions issued for the fight card in Chicago showed Cejudo needed a physician’s clearance but didn’t specify his injury. In the days leading up to the event, Cejudo’s knee was the focus of concern after a report of an injury in training

Longtime MMA fans will already know that Stephen Thompson has a regular presence in his corner for each and every one of his fights – his father. Ray Thompson was a professional kickboxer in his younger days and runs the Upstate Karate gym in South Carolina, where Stephen (14-4-1 MMA, 9-4-1 UFC) also works and trains. Ray was a driving force in Stephen’s martial arts training and subsequent MMA career, and, speaking to reporters backstage at UFC 238, ‘Wonderboy’ paid tribute to his father as he looked forward to Father’s Day. “Man, my dad is everything to me. I don’t know what I’m gonna do when that time comes,” he said. “I know a lot of people who don’t spend their time with their dad – my dad was one of them.
