UFC’s Sarah Frota suspended two years for USADA violation

UFC women’s flyweight Sarah Frota has been suspended two years after running afoul of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. The suspension is the result of an in-competition drug test conducted at UFC 240 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. According to USADA, which announced the suspension Tuesday , the 32-year-old Brazilian tested positive for multiple stanozolol metabolites, including 16α-hydroxystanozolol, 3, 16-dihydroxystanozolol, and 4β,16-dihydroxystanozolol in a urine sample provided the day of the show.

LAS VEGAS – Despite freeing Cris Cyborg of any contractual ties, UFC president Dana White was not finished unloading on the former women’s featherweight champion. Just days after Cyborg (22-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) completed her contract with a win over Felicia Spencer at UFC 240, White revealed in an interview with UFC broadcaster Laura Sanko that he had grown tired of the tenuous relationship with the Brazilian and had opted to wave all exclusive negotiation and matching rights.

The ongoing drama between Cris Cyborg and the UFC took another turn on Friday evening. Cyborg, the former UFC featherweight champion, went on the offensive over social media this week following the expiration of her UFC contract. First, she demanded an apology from UFC president Dana White and color commentator Joe Rogan over what she considered bullying and harassment years ago. Then she posted a video of a backstage talk after UFC 240, calling accusing White of lying over social media. On Friday, White responded by posting a UFC-produced video in which he said they are “getting out of the Cyborg business,” saying the company will not hold her to contractual periods of exclusive negotiation or right to match offers from other promotions

UFC president Dana White revealed Friday that the company has no intention of continuing a working relationship with former featherweight titleholder Cris Cyborg . After a multi-year tenure that consisted of much drama and tension, Cyborg (21-2 MMA, 6-1 UFC) is apparently done with the promotion after seven fights, and White had a lot to say about the Brazilian on her way out the door. The headline of it all, though, is that after completing her contract with a win over Felicia Spencer at UFC 240 this past weekend, White said the organization will wave her exclusive negotiation and matching periods, making her “free and clear” to fight elsewhere as soon as she’d like

If Cris Cyborg is released from her UFC contract, she’s already got one suitor for her next deal. Reached for comment on UFC president Dana White’s stated plan to make Cyborg an unrestricted free agent, Bellator president Scott Coker told MMA Junkie, “That’s great news. I’ll be calling (Cyborg’s manager) Audie (Attar) in the next five minutes.” Coker clarified he’ll first make sure White’s words are followed by an actual release.

Jon Anik said Felicia Spencer was “given credit” for a gutsy effort against Cris Cyborg , but denies his commentary in UFC 240’s co-headliner was biased. The veteran play-by-play announcer on Friday released a public statement reacting to Cyborg’s claims that the UFC commentary team, which includes longtime color commentator Joe Rogan, propped up Spencer despite a one-sided fight. Cyborg, who previously has called out UFC president Dana White and Rogan over mistreatment, claimed the UFC team had been asked by the promotion to degrade her performance, which Anik called “patently false and absurd.” “I have called 140+ shows for the UFC,” Anik wrote on Instagram. “Never once have I been given a directive like this. “Personally, I have always had a great relationship with Cyborg and I hope Cris will read this and understand it is said with 100 percent veracity.” In the co-main event of this past Saturday’s pay-per-view event, Cyborg rebounded from a knockout loss to current two-division champ Amanda Nunes with a unanimous decision win. She landed 122 significant strikes to Spencer’s 38, a strike differential of 84.

For all the mauling Cris Cyborg has done in the cage, it’s kind of amazing she’s never sustained a serious cut. Of course, that’s probably the point. Most of her opponents haven’t gotten the chance to damage because they’re too busy trying to survive. There was something different about Felicia Spencer, who put up a gutsy effort and managed to leave Cyborg with a lasting reminder of their fight last Saturday at UFC 240. Check it out in all of its gruesome glory. Cyborg asks us to guess how many stitches she got as the result of Spencer’s elbow.
