Vicente Luque is as seasoned as they come, but there was nothing that could help him get ready for a teammate’s most recent fight. Luque (18-7-1 MMA, 11-3 UFC) cornered friend and teammate Gilbert Burns for first UFC championship fight in attempt to capture the welterweight title from a familiar face: friend and former teammate Kamaru Usman. It was an unusual situation that dominated the headlines going into the UFC 258 main event in February. “I was nervous because I had never seen two teammates fight in front of me,” Luque told MMA Junkie. “I had never lived through that, especially two of my teammates fighting.

Belal Muhammad explains gritty approach to Dhiego Lima’s calf kicks at UFC 258

The calf kick has become an effective fight-ending weapon in MMA, but Belal Muhammad was determined to not fall victim to the technique in his most recent outing. Muhammad (18-3 MMA, 9-3 UFC) swept the judges’ scorecards in a unanimous decision win over Dhiego Lima at UFC 258 in one of his most refined performances to date. It was a near-flawless performance from Muhammad, who used high pressure and volume to outwork Lima. However, Lima was able to find repeated success with his calf kicks, which seemed to bother Muhammad throughout the fight. But despite the pain of Lima’s well-executed kicks, Muhammad remained unfazed and continued pressing forward. He later admitted that simply pushing the pace was the only way he knew how to deal with them

Gilbert Burns undaunted by UFC 258 loss, says he’ll be champion or die trying

With a few days to reflect upon his failed title bid at UFC 258 , Gilbert Burns admits the loss still hurts but believes it has only increased his hunger to become a champion. “Durinho” knows his early knockdown of UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman brought too much emotion to the surface, and the lack of patience ultimately proved costly. “It’s always painful, but as the days are going, I’m feeling better,” Burns told MMA Junkie. “I watched the fight several times, possibly over 20 times already. I started very good, and I lost the patience. I saw the knockout, and I started going after it too much, loaded up a lot of punches.

Kamaru Usman ’s performance against Gilbert Burns at UFC 258 was that sort that gets people talking about legacy. For one thing, it was his third successful UFC welterweight title defense, which is about the point folks usually start to wonder if we’re in for a historical long title reign. For another, he’s not far off from cleaning out the division, as he’s already beaten everyone from Tyron Woodley to Jorge Masvidal to Colby Covington. But to be the best of all-time at 170, that means you’re being compared to a man many consider the pound-for-pound GOAT in Georges St-Pierre. Those are mighty big shoes to fill. When all is said and done, will Usman surpass GSP’s legacy?
