Islam Makhachev made quick work of perennial lightweight contender Dan Hooker. In a pivotal fight of his career, Makhachev faced Hooker last October at UFC 267 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. It took Makhachev less than a minute to close the distance on Hooker, throwing an overhand right followed by a takedown. Makhachev dragged Hooker to his corner, where he received instructions from his team. Makhachev suffocated Hooker with his top pressure, eventually latching onto his arm and cinching in a kimura, which forced “The Hangman” to tap in Round 1. In his toughest test to date on paper, Khamzat Chimaev made it look easy. Chimaev was matched up with his first ranked opponent in the octagon, and it didn’t take long for him to send a message to the rest of the welterweight division. The undefeated rising star needed less than a round to submit Li Jingliang this past October at UFC 267. Chimaev carried Jingliang from one side of the octagon to the other to have a conversation with UFC president Dana White. Then he slammed him down and cinched in a rear-naked choke. Chimaev (10-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) returns to action April 9 when he takes on former title challenger Gilbert Burns (20-4 MMA, 13-4 UFC) at UFC 273 at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla.

After Kamaru Usman (20-1 MMA, 15-0 UFC) defeated Colby Covington for a second time this past Saturday at UFC 268, many are wondering who can possibly dethrone “The Nigerian Nightmare.” Chimaev (10-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) has ran through competition in his four UFC fights, absorbing just one significant strike. His dominant first-round submission over Li Jingliang at UFC 267 proved he can hang with top contenders, but White thinks he still needs to be properly tested before challenging Usman. “You’ve got some guys out there talking about Khamzat Chimaev that he’s ready for – he’s had four fights in the UFC,” White said at the UFC 268 post-fight news conference.
