Coach Marcos DaMatta argues Petr Yan deserved nod in Aljamain Sterling rematch

LONDON – Petr Yan ’s American Top Team coach Marcos DaMatta thinks his fighter was robbed against Aljamain Sterling at UFC 273. Despite UFC bantamweight champion Sterling’s extensive ground control time against Yan (16-3 MMA, 8-2 UFC) in their rematch in April, DaMatta thought Yan won three of five rounds. One judge scored the fight for Yan, and the other two in favor of Sterling (21-3 MMA, 13-3 UFC) for the split decision win . The judges agreed on the scoring of every round except the opening frame, which was awarded to Sterling by two of the judges Coach “Parrumpa,” however, argues Yan had the better moments in the round. “I feel that he won the fight,” DaMatta told MMA Junkie.

For the first time in his UFC tenure, Chimaev (11-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) faced adversity – a good amount of it – before outlasting Gilbert Burns to win a unanimous decision at UFC 273, but Usman credited him for the win regardless.

UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling can’t understand how the judges didn’t award him a big round for his dominant control of Petr Yan . Sterling (21-3 MMA, 13-3 UFC) defeated Yan (16-3 MMA, 8-2 UFC) by split decision this past Saturday at UFC 273. He was able to take Yan’s back for the majority of both Rounds 2 and 3. The judges ended up scoring those rounds 10-9 in favor of Sterling, and the champion thinks not only should he have at least been given one 10-8 score, there’s no way Yan won Round 1 – despite what John McCarthy and others say .

UFC 273 medical suspensions: Volkanovski, "The Korean Zombie" face same 14 day term

Despite the UFC 273 main event featherweight title fight being a one-sided affair, both fighters will face the same amount of time on the sideline. Alexander Volkanovski picked apart Chan Sung Jung through three rounds before referee Herb Dean stopped the fight early in the fourth round to prevent any further damage. The TKO stoppage capped a dominant performance for the champion, who appeared relatively unscathed after the bout, however, he and “The Korean Zombie” will serve the same 14 days under medical suspension. The Florida State Boxing Commission released the medical suspensions on Wednesday following the pay-per-view event that took place at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla.

Aljamain Sterling left and returned to his home base as a champion. The UFC bantamweight titleholder was successful in his first defense, defeating Petr Yan in the co-main event of UFC 273 this past weekend in Jacksonville, Fla. Sterling (21-3 MMA, 13-3 UFC) won the contest via split decision . It was a title unification bout, as Yan was the interim champion. It was arguably Sterling’s biggest win of his career, as he was just months removed from a neck surgery, hadn’t fought in over a year, and was coming off a controversial win over Yan – which he won via disqualification after taking an illegal knee to the head
