When Michael Chandler fought Tony Ferguson at UFC 274 in May 2022, he was coming off back-to-back losses and in need of a win. Ferguson entered the match having lost his three previous bouts and trying to change course from a downward spiral. The opening round was competitive but the fight came to an abrupt halt early in the second frame. Chandler delivered a front kick to the face of Ferguson send the former interim titleholder crashing to the canvas removed from reality. The UFC has narrowed its list of top 2022 knockout candidates down to a four-KO shortlist. The promotion this week unveiled the four finalists on its list for Knockout of the Year. Fans can vote for their favorite of the four through the UFC’s YouTube channel or social media platforms. Two women and two men make up the final four, and more than they were brutal – and they all were – all the candidates seemed to come out of nowhere, making them nearly impossible to defend against. Michael Chandler delivered one of the greatest knockouts in UFC history against Tony Ferguson. Chandler’s explosive power was on full display when he faced Ferguson at UFC 274 in May. Round 1 saw Chandler getting dropped by a Ferguson left hook in the opening minutes. Ferguson tried to swarm Chandler, but Chandler was able to recover. Ferguson kept throwing heat, but Chandler surprised him with a perfectly timed double-leg takedown. Ferguson cut Chandler with an elbow from bottom, and continuously threw up submission attempts

UFC free fight: Charles Oliveira drops, chokes out Justin Gaethje in Round 1

Charles Oliveira was a man on a mission at UFC 274. Oliveira was stripped of his lightweight title when he missed weight by 0.5 pounds for his title fight against Justin Gaethje at Footprint Center in Phoenix in May, which only fueled him. Oliveira was not eligible to stay champion with a win, but the Brazilian got to work regardless. He met Gaethje right in the middle and walked him down.

Justin Gaethje schedules nose surgery before ‘one last run toward the title’

LAS VEGAS – Justin Gaethje isn’t done chasing the UFC lightweight championship. Gaethje (23-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) has fallen short of undisputed gold on two occasions against Khabib Nurmagomedov, and more recently, Charles Oliveira at UFC 274 in April. He’s remained silent in the fallout of his second title loss , but now he’s ready to speak about his future. The former interim UFC titleholder said he’s going to be out of action for several more months as he prepared for an upcoming nose surgery, which is a nuisance he’s been dealing with for well over a decade, he said.

Tatiana Suarez: Rose Namajunas should’ve wrestled Carla Esparza more, ‘could have beat her in that department’

Tatiana Suarez thinks Rose Namajunas should have trusted her grappling more against Carla Esparza . Namajunas (11-5 MMA, 9-4 UFC) lost her strawweight title to Esparza (19-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) last month at UFC 274 in a rather lackluster affair. Namajunas was uncharacteristically hesitant to engage and in a tough fight to score, the judges decided Esparza was the more active fighter. Being the last fighter to defeat Esparza , Suarez (8-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) has engaged with the champion on the ground and thinks Namajunas should have done the same even though she was out-grappled and submitted in her first fight with Esparza in 2014 . “I was very surprised at how little she did,” Suarez said on The Schmozone Podcast .

Joe Lauzon reveals compensation for last-minute UFC 274 cancelation vs. Donald Cerrone

Joe Lauzon fulfilled all of his UFC 274 pre-fight obligations to step into the cage, but at the last minute, his opponent Donald Cerrone was unable to compete. When a fight gets canceled hours before the scheduled time, the focus turns to sort out what portion of their purse, if anything, the fighter that was ready to compete will receive. Cerrone (36-16 MMA, 23-13 UFC) came down with a non-COVID-related illness on the day of the fight, thus forcing the bout to be scrapped at the last minute. The announcement was made during the early prelims of the pay-per-view event, leaving Lauzon (28-15 MMA, 15-12 UFC) without an opportunity to compete on the main card in what could have been one of the final fights of his lengthy professional career. Ultimately, Lauzon was compensated but did not receive his full show and win money for the last-minute cancelation. Dustin Poirier says Charles Oliveira’s UFC 274 weight miss shows ‘we need to be on digital scales’

Dustin Poirier thinks athletic commissions need to start using digital scales instead of balance-beam versions. Charles Oliveira (33-8 MMA, 21-8 UFC) was forced to vacate his lightweight belt after he missed the 155-pound championship mark by half-a-pound before his UFC 274 title fight against Justin Gaethje. Oliveira missed weight on his first and second attempts. After missing weight on his first try, Oliveira was given an hour by the Arizona commission to make the championship limit, but the Brazilian weighed in at 155.5 pounds once again.
