The women’s bantamweight title changed hands at UFC 316 on June 7 in Newark, New Jersey. Kayla Harrison dethroned former two-time titleholder Julianna Pena in the fight card’s co-main event at the Prudential Center. Harrison secured a submission win via kimura late in the second round to add a UFC championship to her two Olympic gold medals and championships in the Professional Fighters League (PFL).

Former bantamweight titleholder Sean O’Malley went into the UFC 316 championship rematch against Merab Dvalishvili confident that he would win back the title from the man who took it. But it wan’t meant to be. The two first fought at the historic UFC 306 event at The Sphere in Las Vegas last September. The fight went the distance with Dvalishvili winning via unanimous decision and he was even better in the rematch.

Some storylines just write themselves. That’s the case with newly crowned UFC women’s bantamweight champion Kayla Harrison and former multi-division titleholder Amanda Nunes . Harrison captured the women’s 135-pound championship last Saturday in the UFC 316 co-main event, defeating former two-time titleholder Julianna Pena via submission in the second round. Nunes was watching octagon side and entered the cage following the fight to face-off with Harrison. Nunes is pretty much unanimously considered the greatest female mixed martial artist to ever grace the octagon. She retired in 2023 to focus on motherhood. She’s now ready to return and reportedly training twice a day.

Julianna Pena ‘s second women’s bantamweight title run came to an abrupt halt in the UFC 316 co-main event over the weekend in Newark, New Jersey. Late in the second round, Kayla Harrison forced Pena to tap out to a kimura to become the new UFC women’s 135-pound champion. The UFC 316 main card featured a bantamweight bout between former Bellator champion Patchy Mix and No. 10 ranked Mario Bautista . It was Mix’s octagon debut. Mix last fought in May 2024, defending his Bellator bantamweight title against Magomed Magomedov . He entered Saturday’s showdown with Bautista riding a seven-fight winning streak. The last time he lost a fight was in September 2020. Bautista was also riding a seven-fight winning streak and looking to spoil Mix’s debut
