Former UFC champ Matt Serra joins 2018 UFC Hall of Fame class

Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra is getting a spot in the UFC Hall of Fame. The organization announced on tonight’s UFC Fight Night 128 broadcast on FS1 that Serra (11-7 MMA, 7-7 UFC) will be inducted into the 2018 class. He will be the 15th fighter inducted into the “Pioneer” wing. Filed under: News , UFC , Videos When Matt Serra met Georges St-Pierre in the main event of UFC 69, very few people expected the veteran to make it through two rounds, let alone walk away with the belt. Instead, Serra (11-7 MMA, 7-7 UFC), who earned his title shot by winning the welterweight bracket of “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 4, clipped St-Pierre (25-2 MMA, 19-2 UFC) with a wild punch and put him on rubber legs. The follow-up assault from Serra brought the bout to an end at the 3:25 mark of Round 1. Serra walked away with the belt in the shocking upset and handed St-Pierre his only loss in 19 fights from 2005 to his retirement in 2013. St-Pierre won the title back from Serra one year later at UFC 83, but the fight served to cement Serra’s place in MMA histry.

So with that in mind, we offer up one of the biggest upsets in the history of the sport: Matt Serra ’s welterweight title win over Georges St-Pierre in April 2007 at UFC 69. “GSP” was a huge favorite, but Serra stopped him with a first-round TKO to win the belt.
