Moraes pokes Usman, says fight to determine division’s best grappler will be between himself and Maia

SAO PAULO – In his active pursuit of welterweight contender Demian Maia , it seems like Kamaru Usman rubbed another 170-pounder the wrong way. While Maia (24-6 MMA, 18-6 UFC) stuck to some subtle twitter shade in light of the callouts, Sergio Moraes (11-2-1 MMA, 5-1-1 UFC) was a little less discrete in showing his dissatisfaction with fellow UFC Fight Fight 100 winner Usman (9-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) – who was, incidentally, sitting next to him at Saturday’s post-fight news conference. Asked whether “the guy on his right” could be his next opponent, Moraes didn’t answer directly, but brought up that it was Usman who once had to drop out of a previously scheduled bout between them. “I have Demian as an example,” Moraes said.

After first career loss, UFC Fight Night 100 winner Thomas Almeida debuts new, ‘more cautious’ style

SAO PAULO – Another day, another bonus-winning finish for 25-year-old bantamweight Thomas Almeida . After bouncing back from his sole career setback with a second-round TKO over Albert Morales (6-1-1 MMA, 0-1-1 UFC) at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 100, Almeida (21-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) now holds a 20-finish record – including five post-fight UFC bonuses – that represents his aggressive striking style. Although victorious more often than not, Almeida’s aggression has also been known to land him in some tough spots during fights – more recently, the one that resulted in a quick knockout loss to Cody Garbrandt back in May. Which is why he’s been making some adjustments. “This is a new style,” Almeida told reporters at the post-fight press conference. “I get to be more cautious, not expose myself too much, find the gaps and whenever I feel comfortable, be the Thomas I’ve always been, aggressive and looking for the win at all times.” The bantamweight bout was the co-main event of Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 100 event at Ibirapuera Gymnasium in Sao Paulo.

Stewart (8-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) stopped Francimar Barroso (18-6 MMA, 3-3 UFC) with punches at UFC Fight Night 100’s opening scrap after an accidental headbutt . In spite of complaints from Barroso and boos from the crowd, the official call was a technical knockout for the British fighter, who saw no problem with the stoppage.

He’d been knocked out in back-to-back bouts. Before that, he’d undergone spinal surgery after two years of intense pain. He took daily pain medication and slept upright in a chair to cope.
