It was one of the most bizarre things to happen in MMA in 2017. “ Colby Covington , Fabricio Werdum have ugly altercation outside UFC-Sydney hotel; a boomerang flies” That was the headline of MMAjunkie’s story . The first part is nothing new – two fighters getting into an altercation is a normal occurrence. But … “a boomerang flies?” Yeah, that caught everyone’s attention and inspired lots of jokes and memes. Here it is again, just in case you missed it (via YouTube ): So, now that we’re four months removed, and Covington pressed charges , and Werdum paid a $600 fine for assaulting him, the incident is completely in the rear-view mirror.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum was fined $600 for hitting Colby Covington with a boomerang outside the host hotel for UFC Fight Night 121. Werdum, 40, no-showed his court date for the incident, which was captured in two different videos. The court still heard his case and fined him the amount, according to 9News in Sydney . MMAjunkie was unable to immediately reach Werdum for comment

And if you don’t think he went into that fight feeling like his roster spot was on the line, guess again. “That was exactly what I was thinking,” Shelton told MMAjunkie. “I knew I had to get out there and be dominant, whether it was on the ground or on my feet. And I felt when I got it to the ground that I could finish it there, and if not, be dominant.” After the year he had, Shelton (11-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC) had every reason to believe it would take a dominant effort to win over the judges. In both his UFC debut in January, as well as his second fight at UFC 214 in July, Shelton put forth a strong effort and came up short with two consecutive split-decision losses.
