Former UFC bantamweight Carls John de Tomas has accepted a one-year suspension from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency and California State Athletic Commission in connection with his canceled bout at UFC Fight Night 123. The UFC’s anti-doping partner today confirmed Tomas’ suspension, which triggered his release from the promotion this past December. According to USADA, Tomas (8-2 MMA, 0-2 UFC) tested positive for furosemide, a drug used to treat blood pressure that’s banned year round under the category of diuretics and masking agents. The 21-year-old Philippines native failed an out-of-competition test conducted Dec. 8, one day prior to a second-round submission loss against Alex Perez (19-4 MMA, 1-0 UFC) at the Dec

Soukhamthath (12-5 MMA, 1-2 UFC) took his fight with Luke Sanders (11-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) on just two weeks’ notice earlier this month and was a big underdog. But he took out Sanders with a second-round TKO for his first UFC win after back-to-back split-decision losses to start his tenure in the promotion. Now the UFC has rewarded him with what he’s calling an “early Christmas gift.” Soukhamthath posted a video on his Instagram feed saying he had just signed a new five-fight deal with the promotion – and he teased a fight announcement coming soon. Soukhamthath came to the UFC earlier this year as CES MMA’s bantamweight champion and on a three-fight winning streak of knockouts

December was a good month for the UFC’s featherweight division. Champion Max Holloway made his first successful title defense, Brian Ortega scored a slick submission in a televised main event, and Josh Emmett connected with a massive knockout in the co-headliner of a network-televised fight card. Holloway (19-3 MMA, 15-3 UFC), who defended his title with a third-round TKO of Jose Aldo (26-4 MMA, 9-3 UFC) at UFC 218, said he liked what he saw out of the latter two, who are making a surge up the 145-pound rankings toward a crack at the gold. Ortega (13-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) remained undefeated in MMA when he tapped Cub Swanson with a tight choke in the UFC Fight Night 123, and Emmett (13-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) made a statement when he put the lights out on Ricardo Lamas at UFC on FOX 26. Both men beat opponents who have long been ranked in the top five, and Holloway said that’s a big deal. “I was impressed by the two wins by those guys – of course,” Holloway told MMAjunkie.
