An advocate for the creation of an intermediary 165-pound weight class , Kevin Lee has made no secret of the difficult weight descent that goes into hitting the lightweight mark. But it wasn’t until his most recent bout, a UFC Fight Night 128 headliner opposite Edson Barboza (19-6 MMA, 13-6 UFC), that Lee (17-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC) failed to make weight . Lee was the winner with a fifth-round TKO , but not only was the victory a little tarnished, but he also had to give up 20 percent of his fight purse after coming in one pound over the 156-pound limit for the non-title bout. UFC heavyweight Justin Willis has a harrowing story to tell about the violence he encountered growing up. At 10 years old, Willis (7-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) was sent to Frago Treatment Center, a now-defunct youth home in East Oakland, Calif. A two-story building, the center housed 32 kids between the ages of 10 and 17. There were two people staffing the entire facility. The facility’s living room was lined with couches and windowless but for a single adjoining staff office. The big empty spot in the middle was the place where the fights went down

NJSACB denies Merab Dvalishvili’s appeal, upholds UFC Atlantic City win for Ricky Simon

Ricky Simon ’s submission win over Merab Dvalishvili will stand from UFC Fight Night 128. The New Jersey State Athletic Control Board today denied Dvalishvili’s appeal to overturn Simon’s win, ruling the fight’s referee did not meet the commission’s standard for changing an official result. “I do not find that (referee Liam) Kerrigan committed a self-evident and palpable error, or even any error which comes close to that standard,” NJSACB Commissioner Larry Hazzard wrote in a latter sent to Dvalishvili’s manager, Matt Culleywhich. “Solely because a decision is disputed does not make such facially incorrect.” READ IN FULL: NJSACB’s letter in response to Dvalishvili’s manager Dvalishvili (7-4 MMA, 0-2 UFC) filed the appeal on Wednesday, four days after the controversial FS1-televised bout at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. Culley claimed Dvalishvili did not go unconscious when Simon (13-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) applied a choke in the final minute of the fight and shouldn’t have been ruled the loser by submission.
