Free fight: Anthony Smith submits Volkan Oezdemir at UFC Fight Night 138

Anthony Smith was on a charge when he faced Volkan Oezdemir in the main event at UFC Fight Night 138 in Moncton back in October 2018. “Lionheart” had taken the decision to move up from middleweight to light heavyweight and had struck a rich vein of form, having finished former UFC 205-pound champions Rashad Evans and Mauricio Rua, both in the first round. It meant Smith was given the main event spotlight as he took on Swiss knockout artist Oezdemir in a No. 1 contender fight in Canada. It was “No Time” who started the better of the pair, as Oezdemir set to work with his solid striking and heavy top game as he pushed the pace and forced Smith onto the back foot through the first two rounds.

Prior to his fight with Michael Johnson last month at UFC Fight Night 138, Lobov told MMAjunkie that if Johnson missed weight for their bout, he wouldn’t accept the money he’d be fined by the commission. The understanding here was that Johnson accepted the fight on just three weeks’ notice after Lobov’s original opponent, Zubaira Tukhugov, was pulled for attacking Conor McGregor during the UFC 229 post-fight melee .
