I always hear talk about what is “for the good of the fighter” or “for the safety of the fighter.” But I often find myself asking, “When was the last time we saw a change in MMA that really and truly benefited the fighters?” Maybe my memory is shot. But nothing seems to pop up! Let’s take a look. Weight measuring system? Lots of talk, lots of indignation, but we are still putting these athletes through a simply asinine process of extreme dehydration and then an extreme athletic competition in the form of a fight 24 hours later. We talk about it over and over, but then we just keep on at it. This has to be one of the most idiotic processes in sports history

UFC Fight Night 196 medical suspensions: Paulo Costa, Marvin Vettori face 180-day terms

Paulo Costa and Marvin Vettori are both looking at six months off after their five-round war at UFC Fight Night 196. Vettori (18-4-1 MMA, 8-3-1 UFC) outlasted Costa (13-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) in this past Saturday’s main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, and both men took quite a bit of damage in their fight. On Wednesday, MMA Junkie acquired a full list of the UFC Fight Night 196 medical suspensions handed out by the Nevada Athletic Commission from MixedMartialArts.com , the Association of Boxing Commission’s official record keeper. Costa, who was deducted a point in the second round for an inadvertent eye poke, needs an X-ray on his right foot and his left eye cleared by a doctor, or he could be sidelined for 180 days.

Marvin Vettori has dealt with his share of critics over the years, but it’s hard to find fault in his effort throughout the entirety of fight week at UFC Fight Night 196 . Presented with an incredibly difficult situation when his opponent, Paulo Costa (13-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC), requested on fight week that their matchup be moved from middleweight to light heavyweight – a 20-pound switch on just a few days’ notice – Vettori (18-4-1 MMA, 8-3-1 UFC) agreed to the change. Visibly smaller than his hard-hitting opponent on fight night, Vettori nevertheless was able to grind out an impressive decision win in the night’s main event. While the fight did take place at 205 pounds, the result certainly has an impact on the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie middleweight rankings, here Vettori moves up two spots at now sits at No. 5. “The Italian Dream” is hoping to earn another crack at the UFC middleweight title, and he’s certainly within striking distance of that opportunity

It was an intriguing week in the UFC, with Paulo Costa admitting a bicep injury was the culprit behind his inability to make middleweight against Marvin Vettori , leading to the fight ultimately taking place at light heavyweight. Vettori would go on to earn a hard-fought unanimous decision victory at UFC Fight Night 196. Afterward, UFC president Dana White said he believes Costa will need to compete at 205 pounds moving forward, while the Brazilian suggested maybe it was going to take a little more money for him to make a move like that. There are layers of questions to what happened at UFC Fight Night 196, so here goes: What makes sense for Costa now? Is the UFC setting a bad precedent for allowing this? And did Vettori get a raw deal after all was said and done?
