While certainly not a good look when it happened, Aspen Ladd’s weight miss for UFC Fight Night 210 in September may have been a blessing in disguise. Ladd (9-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC) was released by the UFC in the days after she failed to make the women’s bantamweight limit for a fight against Sara McMann. It was the third time Ladd missed weight in the UFC, and the bout was canceled. Not long after, Ladd’s UFC career was scrapped, too. But it didn’t take the 27-year-old long to get back on her feet

Song Yadong not only had to deal with a nasty cut in his fight with Cory Sandhagen, but he fought with a fractured orbital, too. Yadong (19-7-1 MMA, 8-2-1 UFC), who suffered a fourth-round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss to Sandhagen at UFC Fight Night 210 earlier this month, had his night ended early when a gruesome gash around his left eye caused the bout to be waved off. Going into the fifth round, two judges had the bantamweight main event even on the scorecards, while another had Sandhagen winning 3-1. It was the right call for Yadong’s safety to halt the action, and that decision looks even wiser in hindsight. Yadong revealed Tuesday that he suffered a fractured orbital in the fight, as well, and it badly compromised his vision. It appears Aspen Ladd ’s next fight will be outside the UFC. Ladd, once considered one of the most promising women’s prospects in MMA, no longer is with the UFC in the wake of her most recent issue trying to hit her mark on the scale for the women’s bantamweight division. Citing UFC officials, MMA Fighting reported the move Tuesday after algorithm-based Twitter account UFC Roster Watch first alerted social media she was removed from the official UFC women’s bantamweight rankings database. Ladd, 27, has not made an announcement that she’s no longer with the UFC, but a Monday post about one of her dogs on Instagram made a potentially veiled reference to something new in her future when she posted “Here’s to … the next huge milestone in my own life that she will be there for.” Ladd (9-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC) was set to fight Olympic medalist and former UFC title challenger Sara McMann (13-6 MMA, 7-6 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 210 11 days ago

Aspen Ladd ’s disastrous issues at the scale continued at UFC Fight Night 210 when she missed weight for the third time in her promotional tenure. Ladd (9-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC) has a well-documented history of poor weight cuts. In September 2018, she missed weight and had a fight with Leslie Smith canceled after Smith declined to fight an overweight opponent. She had a frightening scene of trembling on the scale ahead of a July 2019 bout with Germaine de Randamie, which she ultimately hit the mark for, but suffered a quick TKO loss. More recently, Ladd missed weight for an October 2021 fight with Macy Chiasson, which was canceled.
