Benson Henderson and Brandon Thatch In this week’s Trading Shots, retired UFC/WEC fighter Danny Downes joins MMAjunkie columnist Ben Fowlkes to look at Benson Henderson’s big win at UFC Fight Night 60, and whether it might have finally changed how fans view him. * * * * Downes: Ben, you don’t strike me as the romantic type, so I know you were in front of the TV last night to see former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson do the damn thing. Just a month removed from his decision loss to Donald Cerrone, Henderson jumped up a division to fight Brandon Thatch and submitted him. Is it just me, or does everyone seem pretty underwhelmed by the whole ordeal? I’d attribute it to the fact that a lot of people aren’t huge Henderson fans.

Since the early days when the sport was anything but a mainstream endeavor, the MMA industry has thrived and survived through various websites, forums and, perhaps most importantly, social-media platforms. Fighters interact with fans, each other and many more through the likes of Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, which helps outsiders get a deeper look into the minds of the athletes. Benson Henderson With two rounds gone in the main event of UFC Fight Night 60, it looked like Benson Henderson had made a very poor decision. The decision to go up in weight, to fight Brandon Thatch , who was something of a monster even among his peers at that weight, and to do it all so soon after his controversial decision loss to Donald Cerrone , when the hurt was still fresh and a man might be motivated to do so dumb things just to stop staring that hurt in the face – all bad ideas. I mean, right? Just look at how he was getting pushed around in there.

Bad news for Jim Alers after eating illegal knee at UFC Fight Night 60

Jim Alers and Chas Skelly The possibility of Jim Alers appealing and overturning his loss at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 60 event is, it seems, slim at best. Alers (13-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) ultimately suffered a second-round TKO loss to fellow featherweight Chas Skelly (14-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) in a FOX Sports 1-televised preliminary-card bout at Broomfield, Colo.’s 1STBank Center. However, prior to the stoppage, which came a mere second before the end of the second round, Skelly caught Alers with an illegal knee. Alers had a knee and hand on the mat, making him a downed opponent, but Skelly connected anyway. Alers was clearly in trouble of being stopped before the blow, but rules are rules, right?

Filed under: News , UFC , Videos Although Tim Elliott didn’t get the win in an entertaining bout with Zach Makovsky on Saturday, he provided a .gif-worthy highlight as he sent his opponent airborne. In a UFC Fight Night 60 preliminary-card bout, Elliott (10-6-1 MMA, 2-4 UFC) wowed Broomfield, Colo.’ 1STBank Center – and the FOX Sports 1 TV audience at home – after wrestler Makovsky (19-5 MMA, 3-1 UFC) repeatedly took him to the mat. But in the third and final round, with Makovsky clinging to his back in a sort of upside-down piggyback, Elliott got back to his feet and then catapulted the tangled mess of fighters in an attempt to break free. Elliott couldn’t shake him free, and he went on to a lose a unanimous decision via 29-28 scores , but the nifty slam earned him some kudos, which might help him avoid a contract termination despite a third-straight loss.
