The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) today announced a two-year suspension of UFC lightweight Gleison Tibau stemming from failed drug tests prior to and following UFC Fight Night 77. In a prepared release, USADA officials stated Tibau tested positive for erythropoietin (EPO) and is ineligible to compete for two years, with his suspension beginning Nov. 7, the date of the FOX Sports 1-televised event at which he submitted Abel Trujillo via first-round rear-naked choke

UFC lightweight Gleison Tibau says he’ll drop USADA appeal, accept two-year punishment

UFC lightweight Gleison Tibau expects to drop the appeal of two positive drug tests stemming from his most recent fight, he told MMAjunkie. In doing so, he will accept a likely two-year suspension from the UFC’s anti-doping partner, USADA. “I’ll take the minimum punishment under the new rules, which is a two-year suspension,” he said today. “So I’ll take the two years.” USADA officials could not immediately be reached for comment. The firm handles drug testing and results management for the UFC. According to the UFC’s anti-doping policy, athletes who are found to have committed an anti-doping violation face a two-year suspension for an “non-specified substance or prohibited method” and a one-year suspension for a specified substance.

Gleison TIbau UFC lightweight Gleison Tibau has been notified of a second potential Anti-Doping Violation by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, this one stemming from an in-competition test at UFC Fight Night 77 in November. Tibau (34-11 MMA, 17-9 UFC) was recently notified of a violation stemming from an out-of-competition test around the time of his UFC Fight Night 77 bout with Abel Trujillo (12-7 MMA, 3-3 UFC), which he won by first-round submission. The 26-fight octagon veteran was provisionally suspended due to the potential failure and in a statement revealed he tested positive for recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO), but adamantly claimed innocence. I’m not used to an easy life.

It’s a debate many have had over the past several years as the oldest active fighter on the UFC roster has fallen into a slump with six losses in his past eight bouts. After more than 16 years of pro competition without a knockout loss, the 45-year-old Henderson (31-14 MMA, 8-8 UFC) has been stopped by strikes in three of his past six fights, the most recent a first-round knockout defeat at the hands – and feet – of Vitor Belfort at UFC Fight Night 77 earlier this month. The legendary former Strikeforce and two-division PRIDE champion has built a special resume since his June 1997 pro debut, but with a record 15 knockdowns suffered in UFC/Strikeforce/PRIDE/WEC competition, it may be time for Henderson to call it quits, at least according to “UFC Tonight” host Kenny Florian . “I don’t think there’s any shame in losing to a guy like Vitor Belfort, but Dan Henderson has to start thinking about retiring at this point because he’s taken a lot of damage, especially if you look at the last several fights he’s had in the UFC,” Florian said on Wednesday’s edition of the FOX Sports 1 program. “He’s been fighting some tough guys, and yes he’s had some wins and won by knockout, but I would like to see him transition.

Rivera (18-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) took a split decision from Munhoz (11-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) on the UFC Fight Pass portion of the UFC Fight Night 77 prelims in Sao Paulo. It was Munhoz’s first fight in more than a year after a suspension, and Rivera said that added to the overall experience of winning in a place like Brazil that isn’t very friendly to outsiders when it comes to winning and losing. “I was very surprised, but as the fight went on, I realized how tough he was,” Rivera told MMAjunkie after the fight. “It was an unbelievable experience to fight him, and I just had to keep grinding it out.
