Chuck Liddell: Latin American MMA scene ‘a few years behind,’ like Europe a decade ago

It’s a little underdeveloped. “You’ve got some great striking, good jiu-jitsu, but they’re missing the rest of the lot, and they’re missing how to connect all three of them together,” Liddell said backstage at this past Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 98 in Mexico City. “I think they’re a few years behind.” Apart from some notable exceptions, Liddell indicated it will take time before native Mexican fighters compete at the level of their American counterparts and others around the world. But with the country’s love of combat sports, and increased exposure from added UFC events, he said it’s just a matter of time before they catch up. “You start picking up a couple of them, and now we’ve got a European champion,” said Liddell, referring to current middleweight titleholder Michael Bisping.

Following his win, Griffin (13-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) told MMAjunkie the win over Montano (7-5 MMA, 1-2 UFC) at the event, which took place at Mexico City Arena in Mexico City and aired on FS1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass, was just an example of the kind of sudden stopping power he has in his hands. But then again, he’s already been through some bumps in the road and passed those tests, and passed another when he won Season 3 of “The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America” on Saturday. So maybe if he has tough challenges ahead at the next level of his career, it’ll seem like old hat. On Saturday, Bravo (11-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) finished Claudio Puelles (7-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) with a second-round TKO to win “TUF: Latin America 3” at UFC Fight Night 98 at Mexico City Arena in Mexico in a bout that aired live on FS1. Related: UFC Fight Night 98 results: Martin Bravo stops Claudio Puelles to win 'TUF 3: Latin America' final “I had a meniscus surgery, and I had to recover from that,” Bravo said through a translator after his victoroy. “I trained with people who are usually bigger than me so that really helped and I was ready for the fight.” Plus, he was ready for a fight in his home country of Mexico.
