UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman was able to do what no other 185-pound fighter could before him, hand former titleholder Anderson Silva his first UFC loss in seven years of competition when the two fought at UFC 162 on July 6. The 29-year-old New Yorker secured an early takedown in the title fight. He attempted two submissions and knocked out the greatest of all time with a left hook in the second frame. It was an amazing feat, but made more incredible by Weidman not being in top form for the fight. “I think I went out there and worked hard and went for everything that I felt. Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva still has thoughts of superfights dancing through his head. At least, he’s said as much in recent interviews. He first has a rematch with Chris Weidman, the man who took his belt, when the two square off at UFC 168 on Dec. 28 in Las Vegas, but as much as he is focused on regaining the title, Silva still entertains the idea of someday facing the likes of welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre or light heavyweight record holder Jon Jones. Truth be known, it still crosses Jones’ mind as well, but it doesn’t distract from what is immediately in front of him… Alexander Gustafsson.

The official numbers are in and UFC 162 is officially a success… at least at the box office. The Nevada State Athletic Commission on Thursday revealed the final tally for UFC 162: Silva vs. Weidman confirming an attendance of 12,964 for gate receipts totaling $4,826,450. UFC 162 took place on July 6 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and aired live on pay-per-view. There were 10,157 tickets sold for UFC 162, while company officials gave away 2,807 complimentary tickets. New UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman made the event one for the history books, capturing the belt by knocking out Anderson Silva in the second round. While many fellow pro fighters predicted that Weidman had the ability to win the fight, the way the fight ended came as a surprise to nearly everyone

Silva suffered a shocking second-round TKO loss to Weidman on July 6 at UFC 162. Immediately after the pay-per-view loss, which snapped Silva’s 17-fight win streak and his string of 10 consecutive UFC title defenses, the 38-year-old said he didn’t want a rematch and was done with title fights. However, UFC President Dana White quickly promised the rematch would happen, and a week later, Weidman (10-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) vs. Silva (33-5 MMA, 16-1 UFC) II was booked UFC 168 on Dec. 28.

Silva, in Portuguese, said he was embarrassed that the allegations might make his home country look bad. The segment was part of Saturday’s edition of the “Legendários” talk show.

Now that the rematch is set and Weidman vs. Silva II is signed for UFC 168 on Dec. 28 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, the odds are coming out for fight number two. Silva, despite the upset loss to Weidman at UFC 162, is still the favored fighter, with the odds opening at -140 for Silva compared to +100 for Weidman, according to the line set by MMAOddsbreaker.com’s Nick Kalikas . The -140 number means that Silva is favored and that you’d have to place a $140 bet on him to win $100, should he win the rematch. The +100 on Weidman means that you would have to wager just $100 on Weidman to win $100 if he again defeated Silva. That’s a bit of a drop from the first fight, where Silva opened at -215 (bet $215 to win $100), while Weidman opened at +165 (bet $100 to win $165)

UFC President Dana White promised the world that new UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman (10-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) and former kingpin Anderson Silva (33-5 MMA, 16-1 UFC) would meet again. Now it’s official. The UFC boss today revealed on ESPN’s SportsCenter that both Weidman and Silva have agreed to meet on Dec. 28 in the headlining bout of a previously announced UFC 168 event, which takes place at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena. The night’s main card, including the Weidman vs. Silva rematch, airs on pay-per-view.
