UFC 252 free fight: Jairzinho Rozenstruik starches Junior Albini in promotional debut

Jairzinho Rozenstruik is not one to leave things in the hands of the judges. Rozenstruik (10-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) made his promotional debut at UFC on ESPN+ 2 in February 2019 when he faced Junior Albini in enemy territory. Albini took the fight to the mat with an early takedown on the experienced kickboxer and was able to control Rozenstruik by advancing positions and attempting submissions, but Rozenstruik hung tough. Rozenstruik momentarily made his way back up, but was taken down once again. This time Albini took Rozenstruik’s back, but “Bigi Boy” defended well and eventually reversed position on the Brazilian before eventually bringing the fight back into his realm by getting back to his feet. After Rozenstruik turned up the power in Round 2 and blasted Albini with a four-piece combination, finishing with a head kick, that sent Albini to the canvas for a spectacular win

Borg (11-4 MMA, 5-4 UFC) is coming off an upset loss to Casey Kenney (12-1-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) in late March at UFC on ESPN 2 in Philadelphia. The fight was his return to bantamweight after fighting former champion Demetrious Johnson for the flyweight title in October 2017. After nearly 18 months away, time off that included dealing with a major health scare for his son involving brain surgery, as well as his own injury, Borg’s weekend in Philly was anything but pleasant – and it started when he missed the bantamweight limit on the scale the day before the fight. Borg missed weight twice at flyweight, so his move to bantamweight wasn’t expected to come with weight issues there, too.

After a quick knockout loss to Justin Gaethje on Saturday, members of Edson Barboza ’s team have taken to social media to wonder about the role of an alleged eye poke in the fight. Shortly after the UFC on ESPN 2 headliner, Barboza’s manager, Alex Davis, tweeted a picture that seemed to capture the moment of the poke. The post that went along with it read, “Not meaning to make excuses, but this did dictate the fight.” On Monday, the Brazilian lightweight’s longtime muay Thai coach, Anderson Franca, posted a picture of Barboza on Instagram with a visibly red eye, along with the same image that Davis tweeted. In the caption, the coach praised Gaethje and said they had a lot of respect for him and his team, but he wondered how the fight would have gone if it wasn’t for the “incident.” “I really think this fight would have been one of the best fights of the year,” Franca’s post read. “Justin Gaethje is an excellent fighter. The Albuquerque-based competitor clocked in at 137.75 pounds for his scheduled bantamweight fight with Casey Kenney (12-1-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) on Saturday night’s prelim card in Philadelphia and had to forfeit 20 percent of his purse because of the miss. But this was no ordinary weight cut gone wrong. Appearing on “The Luke Thomas Show” on Monday, Borg (11-4 MMA, 5-4 UFC) detailed a wild series of events that led to a late-night visit to the hospital in the middle of his weight cut.

The Break: On UFC Philadelphia’s one-hitter quitters, Conor McGregor (again), Eddie Alvarez

Ever have one of those weeks and/or weekends when, by the time you get to Monday, you can barely remember everything that happened? That’s more or less every week in the world of combat sports, where the realm of the bizarrely newsworthy is pretty much where we live. Which is why MMA Junkie columnist Ben Fowlkes brings you “The Break” to make sense of what just happened, presented in the time it takes to grab a refill of coffee before the boss notices you’re missing. This week, we look back at this past Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 2 event in Philadelphia, where we saw a massive Justin Gaethje o ne-punch knockout in the main event . And we saw another massive one-punch KO from Josh Emmett , who snatched victory from the jaws of almost certain defeat. And hey – Conor McGregor made some news again ! What a shocker! And so did former UFC and Bellator champ Eddie Alvarez – and not in the way we expected .
