It’s not often the MMA world gets dueling Bellator and UFC events on the same night, but that was the case this past Saturday. At Bellator 263, A.J. McKee (18-0 MMA, 18-0 BMMA) took out longtime featherweight champ Patricio Freire (32-5 MMA, 20-5 BMMA) in the final of the featherweight grand prix and became 145-pound champion in the process. At UFC on ESPN 28, Sean Strickland (24-3 MMA, 11-3 UFC) dominated Uriah Hall (17-10 MMA, 10-8 UFC) to move to the next level of middleweight contenders. But those two headliners weren’t the only ones making moves. What about the big finishes from Cheyanne Buys and Jared Gooden for their first UFC wins

Video: Cheyanne Buys reignites fighter pay conversation, and it’s not a good look

Cheyanne Buys made a pretty big splash with her first UFC win this past Saturday – and it mostly was peripheral to her first-round TKO win. Buys (6-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) took out Gloria de Paula (5-4 MMA, 0-2 UFC) in the UFC on ESPN 28 co-main event. After the card, she picked up a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus – and that turned out to be huge for her. Buys said at her post-fight news conference that her bank account was negative after she and her husband packed up to move from Dallas to Las Vegas, and she had taken out some big loans to essentially fund her career and stay afloat for the fight.

UFC on ESPN 28 medical suspensions: Headliners Sean Strickland, Uriah Hall among 10 facing 6-month terms

Half of the UFC on ESPN 28 card, including the night’s headliners, are looking at 180-day medical suspensions after their fights. Sean Strickland , who scored a lopsided unanimous decision over Uriah Hall in the main event, needs an X-ray on his left thigh and knee, as well as a dental evaluation of his lower prosthetic tooth before getting cleared to compete again. On Tuesday, MMA Junkie acquired a full list of the UFC on ESPN 28 medical suspensions handed out by the Nevada Athletic Commission from MixedMartialArts.com , the Association of Boxing Commission’s official record keeper. Hall, who saw his four-fight winning streak snapped, will need clearance for his right orbital floor fracture or he could be looking at significant time on the shelf.
