At UFC on ESPN 35 this past Saturday in Las Vegas, a couple fights in particular brought MMA judging back into the forefront. In the main event, Rob Font outstruck Marlon Vera 233-134, but lost a unanimous decision.

Shanna Young got past ‘nerves and dread’ for first UFC win at UFC on ESPN 35

LAS VEGAS – Without a win in more than two years, and losses in her first two fights in the UFC, Shanna Young could be forgiven if her confidence was waning. And that’s exactly what the women’s flyweight said was going on in her career after UFC losses to “Ultimate Fighter” winner Macy Chiasson and Stephanie Egger in 2020 and 2021. Throw in a loss on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2019, and Young was in big-time need of a win. That’s what she got Saturday to open UFC on ESPN 35 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Video: Is the heavyweight division poised to become the UFC’s marquee weight class?

It wasn’t that long ago that the UFC’s heavyweight division arguably was its weakest link. Statistically, when the record in that weight class for title defenses is three, held by Stipe Miocic, it doesn’t say a lot about fighter dominance over the long haul. Plenty of names have come and gone, making the division a little unstable, at best.

LAS VEGAS – After picking up his second straight win at UFC on ESPN 35, Gabe Green wants to rematch an old foe. Green (11-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) came from behind to finish Yohan Lainesse this past Saturday at the UFC Apex and hopes to get the opportunity to avenge a loss from his promotional debut. In May 2020, Green faced Daniel Rodriguez in a short-notice fight in which he found some success on the feet, but ultimately was outstruck over the course of three rounds.

Natan Levy learned he doesn’t have to always throw bombs to win at UFC on ESPN 35

LAS VEGAS – Natan Levy learned a big lesson in his UFC debut and put that into action Saturday. Levy wanted to show off his power against Rafa Garcia this past November. And while the average observer would say Levy is positively ripped for a 155-pounder, he said he had to figure out after his decision loss that showcasing his heavy hands might not always be the path to victory. At UFC on ESPN 35, Levy (7-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) took a unanimous decision from Mike Breeden (10-5 MMA, 0-2 UFC) for his first win in the promotion. And though he slowed down in the third round after looking for finishes in the first two frames, he still thinks he brought the lesson from the Garcia fight into the Breeden bout

Francisco Figueiredo recaps historic kneebar win: ‘We worked on that drill a lot’

LAS VEGAS – Francisco Figueiredo scored a historic submission win at UFC on ESPN 35. Figueiredo (13-4-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) submitted Daniel da Silva with a kneebar this past Saturday at the UFC Apex and became the first flyweight in company history to do so. The brother of UFC 125-pound champion Deiveson Figueiredo explained that he didn’t expect da Silva to shoot on him, but he was ready for that position. “He surprised me with that takedown to start the fight,” Figueiredo told MMA Junkie at a post-fight news conference
