Covington battled back in the second frame but absorbed more damage. In the third, Buckley finished “Chaos” due to doctor stoppage after leaving Covington cut and in a bloody mess.  Buckley headlines this Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 69 fight card against former champion  Kamaru Usman at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Covington stepped in to face  Joaquin Buckley in the UFC on ESPN 63 main event when the fight promotion opted to place Buckley’ original opponent,  Ian Machado Garry , against  Shavkat Rakhmonov  instead.  It had been a year since Covington had fought, losing to Leon Edwards at UFC 296 in December 2023.

Sonnen cornered Covington (17-5 MMA, 12-5 UFC) in his doctor stoppage TKO loss to Joaquin Buckley (21-6 MMA, 11-4 UFC) earlier this month at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla. The doctor waved the fight off toward the end of Round 3 after a laceration on Covington’s right eyelid did not stop bleeding. Covington wasn’t happy with the outcome, but Sonnen later admitted he was on the verge of throwing the towel in to stop the fight.
