When the two met at the January 2014 event at United Center in Chicago, Caceres (12-8 MMA, 7-6 MMA) overcame some impressive striking flourishes from Pettis (14-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) in the early stages of the bout.

Josh Thomson ‘sick to my stomach’ over Pettis-Melendez, potential retirement likely on hold

UFC lightweight Josh Thomson was leaning toward retirement following a split-decision loss to Benson Henderson at UFC on FOX 10, but very recently had a change of heart about his future. Thomson, 35, was fired up when he read that his three-time opponent, Gilbert Melendez, is set to coach “The Ultimate Fighter 20″ opposite lightweight champ Anthony Pettis in advance of a title shot later this year. Thomson (20-6 MMA, 3-2 UFC) thinks he should have gotten Melendez’s opportunity, and now he wants to return to the cage to show the UFC why. “It made me kind of sick to my stomach,” he told MMAjunkie Radio.

UFC champ Demetrious Johnson willing to go to bantamweight – for the right incentive

UFC flyweight champ Demetrious Johnson is rolling through the 125-pound division and an argument could be made by some that he could clean out the weight class by year’s end. But Johnson (19-2-1 MMA, 7-1-1 UFC) isn’t exactly anxious to try his hand once more in the bantamweight division, where he first competed as a fighter under contract with Zuffa. The incentives have to be there. “I don’t want to say it’s not in my future,” Johnson recently said of the potential to move back to 135 pounds, even for a superfight. “When Dana White talks about [Georges St-Pierre] (and) Anderson Silva fighting each other, or Jon Jones-Anderson Silva, he always says, ‘They’re going to make a lot of money.’ “Now, if Dana White comes to me and says, ‘Ya know, Demetrious, you’ve cleaned out the whole flyweight division – now I’d like you to go up to the bantamweight division,’ he’s got to make it worth my while.” Of course, Johnson, who’s thrice defended his belt, has a different definition of what it means to clear out a division, which might keep him stationary for the near future. “I believe the UFC is doing a great job getting more flyweights in the division, and I don’t think I’ve cleaned out the division until I’ve beaten everybody in the division,” he said

If you’re expecting UFC heavyweight Stipe Miocic to steal headlines with bold statements following his huge win over Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC on FOX 10, prepare to be disappointed. Miocic (11-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC), who outpointed Gonzaga (16-8 MMA, 11-7 UFC) en route to a unanimous decision-victory this past Saturday night at Chicago’s United Center, is not the type to stir the pot and call out his fellow heavyweight contenders. Moreover, he’s not even willing to narrow down a list of who or when he would like to fight next. The 31-year-old seems to have a carefree attitude when it comes to the progression of his career, and that’s why he has no preference about what’s next after defeating Gonzaga. “I’ll fight whoever they want me to fight,” Miocic told MMAjunkie Radio. “I’m not much of a caller-outer guy.” With UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez sidelined with an injury for most of the year, all the contenders are jockeying for position so they’re as close to the front of the line when the champ returns.

Duke Roufus details split with UFC bantamweight Chico Camus

When UFC bantamweight Chico Camus stepped in the cage at UFC on FOX 10 in Chicago this past Saturday night, he did so without his friends at Milwaukee’s Roufusport gym behind him. That’s because, as Camus (14-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC) told reporters following his unanimous win over Yaotzin Meza, he split with the team weeks earlier , forcing him to cobble together a training camp from multiple sources. “We kind of had a falling out,” said Camus, who declined to go into detail over the source of the conflict, except to say that it was “a misunderstanding.” But according to Roufusport head coach Duke Roufus, it wasn’t one that developed overnight, nor is it one that’s likely to be forgotten any time soon.

Trainer: Sergio Pettis to use UFC bonus money toward surgery

UFC bantamweight Sergio Pettis suffered the first loss of his professional career at UFC on FOX 10 on Saturday night, and according to his coach, Duke Roufus, Pettis “didn’t take it well.” Then again, Roufus added, “most successful people don’t.” In the third and final round of a “Fight of the Night” bonus-worthy effort against Alex Caceres (10-5 MMA, 5-3 UFC), Pettis attempted a heel hook that turned into a scramble, which in turn allowed Caceres to lock up a rear-naked choke for the submission finish. It was a devastating turn of events for Pettis (10-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC), but Roufus insists that some good will come out of it.
