How Cory Sandhagen’s sole pro loss helped him become ‘mental monster’ of stellar UFC debut

Cory Sandhagen ’s style might present a few dangers. But, not to toot his own horn there, he’s quite into it. Sandhagen (8-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) introduced himself to the UFC audience in rather eye-catching manner last month, when he finished Austin Arnett in the second round of a short-notice UFC on FOX 27 call. It was the promotional newcomer’s second fight in an eight-day span : On Jan. 19, he’d finished an LFA bout in 67 seconds. Despite the adverse circumstances, Sandhagen impressed by putting on a composed striking display before finding the fight-ending liver shot.

Katlyn Chookagian wants top flyweight contender after first UFC win in division

CHARLOTTE – Katlyn Chookagian felt right at home in her victory at UFC on FOX 27. That’s because she was fighting in her natural weight class for the first time in the UFC. Chookagian (10-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) defeated Mara Romero Borella (12-5 MMA, 1-1 UFC) by unanimous decision on Saturday’s card at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C. It was her promotional debut at flyweight, and although she doesn’t feel the performance revealed her best, “Blonde Fighter” was pleased to get the win.

CHARLOTTE – Ji Yeon Kim was, understandably, happy about beating fellow flyweight Justine Kish on Saturday. After all, it’s not every day that a fighter gets to pick up her first UFC win, let alone a win against a tough opponent like Kish (6-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC), who was fighting in her own backyard at UFC on FOX 27. Kim (7-1-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) had to make the particularly long journey from her own home in South Korea. “It was my first time coming to the (U.S.),” Kim told MMAjunkie via an interpreter after the preliminary-card bout, which aired live on FS1 from Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C.
