Max Griffin wants new UFC contract, fight in hometown of Sacramento

UFC welterweight Max Griffin gambled big that he’d upset Mike Perry at UFC on FOX 28, quitting his job and fighting out his contract. Now, Griffin (14-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) wants a fight in his hometown of Sacramento, Calif. He also wants a new deal that reflects his worth – and makes up for that lost day job at Blue Cross Blue Shield. “I want to get my contract,” he told MMAjunkie Radio. “That was the last fight, so now we’re trying to renegotiate and get paid, becauase I want to start coming after these guys.” Griffin said the UFC was interested in a new contract prior to the Perry (11-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC) fight. But he chose to not sign a deal so his asking price would be higher in the event of a win

There’s no question in John McCarthy ’s mind that the knee Jeremy Stephens threw en route to knocking out Josh Emmett was illegal. “Dominick Cruz and Michael Bisping sitting up there (and saying), ‘I don’t think it touched him’ – you’re wrong,” McCarthy told MMAjunkie Radio when asked about the controversial stoppage this past Saturday at UFC on FOX 28. “It touched him.” The real question for the veteran referee turned Bellator commentator is how Stephens (28-14 MMA, 15-13 UFC) thought he could throw it in the first place. “How do we get a fighter so confused over rules that they don’t know what the hell they can do or when they can do it. Watching Rani Yahya put on yet another grappling clinic this past Saturday, you probably couldn’t tell just the type of sacrifice that had gone into making it up to the octagon in the first place. But then, shortly after a third-round armbar submission win over Russell Doane (15-8 MMA, 3-5 UFC), Yahya’s (25-9 MMA, 10-3 UFC) short-but-sweet speech told a tragic story. “Mom, wherever you are, I love you,” Yahya said in Portuguese. “You were the best mom in the world. Thank you for everything.” There’s isn’t really ever a good time for these things. But, in Yahya’s case, it was particularly unfortunate: His mom died a mere 11 days before UFC on FOX 28.

Well, well, well. What are we to think of Jeremy Stephens ’ win over Josh Emmett at UFC on FOX 28? Stephens (28-14 MMA, 15-13 UFC) finished Emmett (13-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) in violent fashion on Saturday night in his second straight main event, but the knockout wasn’t without controversy . Emmett and his team weren’t happy with an apparent illegal knee and elbows to the back of the head that helped end the fight after Stephens dropped him with a left hand. Related Why can't MMA have unified rules that are actually, you know, unified? Emmett has declared his intention to appeal the outcome.
