Dustin Poirier left no doubt when he ran things back with Eddie Alvarez . Poirier (25-6 MMA, 17-5 UFC) faced Alvarez in the main event of UFC on Fox 30 in 2018, a rematch from their UFC 211 fight which ended in a no contest when Alvarez struck Poirier with an illegal knee in the second round. It didn’t take long for both fighters to meet in the middle of the octagon. Alvarez pressured from the outset, centering his attack around leg kicks and body shots. Poirier returned fire with a hard leg kick which caught Alvarez off balance and used his jab to pepper Alvarez in the face throughout the round

Eddie Alvarez is a free agent following his loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC on FOX 30 last month. And at this point, it doesn’t look like a lock that he’ll return to the octagon. Alvarez (29-6 MMA, 4-3 UFC) bet on himself when he opted not to sign a new contract ahead of the fight with Poirier (24-5 MMA, 16-4 UFC), which he lost by second-round TKO . The former UFC and Bellator champ now finds himself in an interesting predicament with just one victory in his past four bouts. Although Alvarez has proven himself to be one of the great action fighters in the sport since he turned pro in 2003, it remains to be seen what the future holds.

Former lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez praised Dustin Poirier and defended coach Mark Henry amid controversy over his loss at UFC on FOX 30. Alvarez (29-6 MMA, 4-3 UFC) issued his first public comments since his loss to Poirier (24-5 MMA, 16-4 UFC) in the FOX-televised headliner of this past Saturday’s event, taking in stride the setback that dashed hopes of a title shot. “Hats off to Dustin and his team he stayed calm under pressure and fought beautifully this makes us 1-1,” Alvarez wrote on his official Instagram page. Alvarez didn’t fault Henry for calling the elbow that resulted in a stand-up, chalking it up to a “miscommunication” in the heat of the moment. “It happens in war more often than not,” Alvarez wrote. “This was a case of ‘friendly fire’ and we ended up on the losing end of this battle.” Alvarez also didn’t blame referee Marc Goddard for making the call to reset the fight, which shortly after resulted in his second-round TKO loss

But they need not wonder where he stands on his future. “They already know what I’m going to say: If it’s not a title fight, I’m not answering the phone,” Poirier (24-5 MMA, 16-4 UFC) told MMAjunkie Radio after stopping Alvarez (29-6 MMA, 4-3 UFC) in past Saturday’s network-televised main event at Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Poirier is targeting the winner of an expected title fight between UFC lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov (26-0 MMA, 10-0 UFC) and ex-champ Conor McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC)
