UFC free fight: Jack Hermansson submits Gerald Meerschaert in Round 1

Jack Hermansson has proven time and time again just how dangerous he is on the mat. Coming off the biggest win of his career over Thales Leites, Hermansson faced Gerald Meerschaert at UFC on FOX 31 in December 2018. His grappling was put to the test against jiu-jitsu blackbelt Meerschaert, but it took Hermansson less than 20 seconds to get the fight to the mat and immediately establish full mount. Meerschaert hung tough, but Hermansson dominated all positions in the grappling exchanges, eventually sinking in a guillotine choke and submitting Meerschaert right before the end of Round 1. Hermansson returns to action Saturday against Marvin Vettori (15-3-1 MMA, 5-2-1 UFC) in the main event of UFC on ESPN 19, which takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Gerald Meerschaert had dreams of a home-cage early Christmas present a couple years back, but Jack Hermansson had other ideas. The middleweights threw down in the middle of the UFC on FOX 31 prelims in December 2018 in Milwaukee, where Meerschaert trains at Roufusport. Hermannsson was fighting in the United States for the first time in more than five and a half years. And he left Meerschaert with a bad taste in his mouth. Hermansson took down Meerschaert early and wasted no time dominating the fight on the canvas. And though Meerschaert tried to find ways back to his feet, eventually Hermansson latched onto his neck and forced him to tap to a guillotine choke with 35 seconds left in the first round

Al Iaquinta to Conor McGregor: ‘What’s your excuse’ on not going five rounds?

UFC lightweight Al Iaquinta is always down to roast the opposition on Twitter, but he also appreciates a good response. When former two-division champ Conor McGregor (21-4 MMA, 9-2 UFC) didn’t give him one after a recent rant , he was a little disappointed. “It’s not, ‘Who the fook is that guy?’ That’s what I was hoping for,” Iaquinta (14-4-1 MMA, 9-3 UFC) told MMAjunkie Radio. McGregor targeted famed MMA coach Firas Zahabi and UFC commentator Joe Rogan for saying Iaquinta fared better against UFC lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov. He called Zahabi a “twerp” who hadn’t fought and “hit a clock for a living.” Zahabi, who also predicted featherweight champ Max Holloway would defeat McGregor in a rematch, responded that the observation wasn’t personal and thanked the ex-champ for listening to his podcast

Ray Longo shocked that Al Iaquinta was underdog for Kevin Lee rematch

MMA coach Ray Longo expected Al Iaquinta to receive a little more credit for going five rounds against UFC lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov. Apparently, he was wrong. Longo was blown away to see betting lines favor Kevin Lee in their rematch this past Saturday at UFC on FOX 31. “Why you would make Lee the favorite is beyond me,” Longo on Wednesday told MMAjunkie Radio.

In the lightweight co-main event, Edson Barboza (20-6 MMA, 14-6 UFC) absolutely brutalized Dan Hooker (17-8 MMA, 7-4 UFC) to get a third-round knockout after Hooker no longer could take getting kicked to the body. And in the headliner, Al Iaquinta (14-4-1 MMA, 9-3 UFC) made his case to stay in the title picture with a big win over Kevin Lee (17-4 MMA, 10-4 UFC). MILWAUKEE – Bobby Green almost instigated a tussle at the weigh-ins and trash-talked Drakkar Klose in the octagon at UFC on FOX 31. None of it bothered Klose (10-1-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC), who still considers Green (24-9-1 MMA, 5-4-1 UFC) a friend despite a heated confrontation at this past Saturday’s event. “That’s what he does to hype himself up,” Klose said backstage at Fiserv Forum, which hosted the FS1-televised fight in Milwaukee. “He had me laughing a few times.” Klose said Green called him an unflattering name during their fight, which went back and forth over three rounds. But the more his opponent talked, the more he took it as a sign his opponent was losing. Green was heartbroken and shocked when judges declared a 29-28 decision for Klose
