Bellator 98 suffered several bumps in the road en route to finally taking place on Saturday night at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn., but eventually did take place with the Bellator middleweight championship on the line. Alexander Shlemenko defended his belt, winning a unanimous decision over Brett Cooper, who stepped into the fight as a replacement for the injured Doug Marshall. Shlemenko established his dominance early with his stand-up game, landing with greater frequency and greater power than Cooper.

Joe Warren Removed from Saturday’s Bellator 98 Fight Card Over Medical Concerns

Former Bellator featherweight champion Joe Warren has been removed from Saturday’s Bellator 98 fight card . The Mohegan Tribe Department of Athletic Regulation, the regulating body for Saturday’s event at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Conn., deemed Warren ineligible after reviewing the medical documentation he submitted. Bellator officials on Friday released a statement announcing the change. “I’ve been fortunate to work with one of the best commissioners in the sport in Mike Mazzulli, and after carefully reviewing Joe’s medical documents, everyone agreed to err on the side of caution with the goal of ensuring our fighters safety,” said Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney

Bellator will kick off its ninth season and conclude its new “Fight Master” reality show on Sept. 7 with Bellator 99, a live event that features a title fight. Officials today announced a headliner between middleweight champion Alexander Shlemenko (47-7 MMA, 8-1 BFC) and recent tournament winner Doug Marshall (18-6 MMA, 4-0 BFC). Bellator 99 takes place Sept. 7 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. A three-hour main card airs on Spike TV (8 p.m. ET/PT) following prelims on Spike.com (6 p.m. ET)

Bellator MMA’s Season 9 debut will take place Sept. 7 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The first official bout for the event sees former Bellator featherweight champ Joe Warren (8-3 MMA, 6-2 BFC) meet Nick Kirk (10-2 MMA, 0-2 BFC) in a bantamweight tourney contest. Bellator officials announced the details of the event, Bellator 99, on Wednesday night’s Bellator 96 broadcast. As with all of the promotion’s Season 9 events, the Bellator 99 main card airs on Spike TV.
