Entering the championship tournament fresh off a victory over UFC veteran Kris McCray this past March after a 19-month layoff, Villefort is primed to make a run at his first world title.

Brazilian fighters have been making a name for themselves competing in Asia since the dawn of modern MMA competition when Rickson Gracie would submit multiple opponents in a single night at Vale Tudo Japan. Today, the sport has evolved almost beyond recognition, but fighters from the same country that gave us the Gracies are still holding their own in Asia. Among them is Rodrigo Caporal, a long-term resident of Hong Kong, who recently became the 155-pound champion of China. Caporal (9-4) has won five fights out of five since signing with RUFF, a Chinese organization that is government sanctioned, giving its fighters the right to call themselves national champions of the most populated country on the planet. The 30-year-old, who holds a black belt in BJJ, won the title at RUFF 8 in February by defeating Haotian Wu in a rematch. In addition to the belt, he received one million RMB (160,000 USD) in prize money. “Winning the belt meant a lot to me, to see all my hard work and dedication pay off made me very happy. My plan is to use the money to help my family and to help build my life together with my girlfriend,” he said. Caporal’s record competing in Brazil was unremarkable, but he has won six fights out of six in Asia and believes that his skillset as a BJJ black belt gives him an edge against the predominantly Chinese opponents he has been facing.

Megumi Fujii announces retirement plans after one final fight in Japan

After nearly 10 years in the MMA game, Megumi Fujii will hang up the gloves – after one final fight. Fujii (26-2) on Saturday announced her pending retirement on her Twitter account, saying she will compete for Vale Tudo Japan on October 3, then call it quits. Of her 26 career wins, the 39-year-old has 19 by submission and has never been stopped – her only two losses have gone the distance. Fujii started her MMA career an amazing 22-0 before suffering her first loss, a split-decision setback to Zoila Frausto Gurgel at Bellator 34 in a fight to determine the promotion’s first 115-pound women’s champion. Prior to that loss, after fighting just three times outside her native Japan in her first 19 fights, she came to the States and picked up three wins for Bellator.

Women’s mixed martial arts pioneer Megumi Fujii on Saturday became the latest fighter to announce her retirement. Fujii announced that she would fight one more time, at Vale Tudo Japan 3rd on Oct. 5, and then step out of the cage for the final time. The 39-year-old Fujii has been competing for the better part of the last decade, amassing a 26-2 professional record. Her only two defeats were decision losses to Zoila Gurgel in a Bellator title fight and Jessica Aguilar in a Bellator feature bout

The biggest fight in Asian MMA this month is taking place in the main event of Vale Tudo Japan (VTJ) on Saturday night when top Japanese bantamweights Shintaro Ishiwatari and Kyoji Horiguchi go head to head in Tokyo. Ishiwatari (15-4-4) is the current bantamweight King of Pancrase, while Horiguchi (10-1) is the reigning Shooto featherweight (132-pound) champion, a belt he won by submitting Hiromasa Ogikubo in March. Horiguchi comes from a Karate background and fights with his hands hanging low, but he is well rounded and aggressive with solid wrestling and submission skills. Ishiwatari is a southpaw with a dangerous left kick, but both love to let their hands go which should make for some entertaining exchanges. The card also features 38-year-old Caol Uno (27-16-5) who has gone 2-3 since his second stint in the UFC ended in 2010. He is campaigning at 145 pounds these days and will need to roll back the years and rediscover the sort of form which made him a two-time UFC title challenger if he is to overcome American Anthony Avila (10-1)
