Brazilian lightweight Michel Prazeres isn’t dwelling on the fact his recent opponent was cut after a narrow loss. The 32-year-old Brazilian most recently fought this past November, and he earned a split-decision victory over Valmir Lazaro (14-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC). Every major media outlet scoring the fight had Lazaro as the winner (via MMADecisions.com ), but the cageside judges disagreed and awarded Prazeres the split decision via 29-28, 28-29 and 29-28 scores. Prazeres (19-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC), who next fights Cottrell (17-3 MMA, 0-0 UFC) at Saturday’s UFC on FOX 20 event, looks at this way: One of them was likely to get a pink slip, and he’s just just glad it wasn’t him. “Against Valmir it was a hotly contested bout,” he told MMAjunkie.

Michel Prazeres MONTERREY, Mexico – Michel Prazeres tried a variety of tactics to get inside Valmir Lazaro ’s reach, from lunging hooks to desperate takedown attempts. While neither approach was especially successful, Prazeres (19-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) apparently stayed busy enough to impress the judges, beating Lazaro (13-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC) via split-decision (29-28, 28-29. 29-28) after three close rounds. The lightweight bout opened up the preliminary card of today’s UFC Fight Night 78 event at Monterrey Arena in Monterrey, Mexico. Valmir Lazaro LOS ANGELES – Valmir Lazaro was able to outwork James Krause over three rounds of their UFC 184 prelim bout, earning a split decision. Both Krause (21-7 MMA, 2-3 UFC) and Lazaro (13-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) were content to spend the majority of the fight using their long frames to score from a variety of angles. But Lazaro got the split call with scores of 29-28, 28-29, 29-28. The lightweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC 184 event at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
