Two Japanese fighters recently released by the UFC have been snapped up by Korean promotion Road FC and will be fighting on Oct. 12 in Gumi, South Korea.

Prior to UFC 163 , middleweight jiu-jitsu ace Thales Leites hadn’t fought inside the Octagon since losing to Alessio Sakara at UFC 101 in 2009. That split-decision loss came just months after Leites battled middleweight champion Anderson Silva at UFC 97. For many, the release came as a surprise, as Leites was touted as one of the more highly praised ground players in MMA at the time. On Saturday night at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Leites found himself once again fighting inside the Octagon, having toiled in various promotions for the past four years. During his time away from the UFC , the Nova Unaio product managed a 6-1 record, scoring wins over UFC vets Matt Horwich and Jeremy Horn, earning his way back into the world’s premier fighting organization. English brawler Tom “Kong” Watson was the fighter given the job of welcoming Leites back to the cage. And as far as Watson was concerned, it certainly wouldn’t be a friendly welcome. Round one saw the Rio native, Leites, open up with the aggression you would expect from a man who probably spent the last 50 or so months wondering if he would ever be fighting for divisional relevancy again.

In three years, he’d amassed a 6-1 record and beaten a list of UFC vets that included Dean Lister , Jesse Taylor and Jeremy Horn . A loss to Matt Horwich in 2010 was avenged two years later. LAS VEGAS – Tim Kennedy not only was willing to grapple with Roger Gracie, he took the jiu-jitsu ace to the ground. Although Kennedy struggled to find the 6-foot-4 Gracie’s chin, he controlled the fight to shut out the Brazilian on two of three judges’ scorecards. The middleweight bout of Strikeforce vets was part of the main card of today’s UFC 162 event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook. Things looked good for Gracie early in the first round when he took Kennedy down and transitioned to back mount. For a few tense moments, Kennedy suffered through a body triangle and fought off choke attempts. But he eventually escaped to his feet, where he snuck strikes in close. In the second frame, Kennedy turned the tables on Gracie and took the fight to the mat, where he landed several punches that shifted the fight’s momentum.

You may remember Rob Kimmons (25-9) from his time with the UFC and Tyler Stinson (25-9) from his stints with Bellator and Strikeforce. Now, you’ll remember their recent clash due to the carnage. The fighters met this past Saturday at Epic Fight Night 1 in Kansas City, Mo. Unfortunately, one of the Midwestern welterweights left the cage with a first-round TKO loss and a nasty ankle injury. Tyson Griffin vs. Gesias Cavalcante slated for WSOF 4

A lightweight bout between big-show vets Tyson Griffin (16-6) and Gesias Cavalcante (17-7-1) is the latest addition to August’s World Series of Fighting 4 lineup. WSOF officials recently confirmed the bout with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) following an initial report from Tatame . WSOF takes place Aug. 10 at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif. The main card, which is likely to include Griffin vs. Cavalcante, airs on NBC Sports Network. Griffin, a former UFC lightweight contender who also had a short stint at featherweight, makes his promotional debut.
