‘Rampage’ Jackson on Roy Jones Jr. fight: ‘Tito f—ed all that up’

Bellator MMA light heavyweight and ex-UFC champ Quinton Jackson said he wanted to fight former boxing champ Roy Jones Jr. at the promotion’s pay-per-view event slated for winter. But UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz put the kibosh on that. Or in the words of “Rampage,” “f—ed it all up.” This past week, Bellator threw MMA fans a curveball when it announced Ortiz as Jackson’s opponent rather than Jones, who had been targeted for a boxing match with “Rampage.” Jackson (32-11 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) and Ortiz (16-11-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA), who’ve been friends for over a decade, will headline the Viacom-owned promotion’s first foray into pay-per-view on Nov. 2 at Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, Calif. Jackson said he was putting together a training camp for Jones and planned to cut to 200 pounds, which is the limit for boxing cruiserweights, when he got word that Bellator was going to sign Ortiz. Despite recent pleas, UFC boss Dana White still lukewarm on Paul Daley

LOS ANGELES – UFC President Dana White has heard Paul Daley ‘s pleas for a new UFC contract, but he remains hesitant to bring the welterweight back into the fold. “I don’t know,” White told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) when asked for his reaction to Daley’s attempts to return to the UFC. “Bellator cut him for some reason.” When informed of the assault conviction that prompted Daley’s ouster from the Viacom-owned promotion, White joked, “Sounds fun. Sounds like something I want to deal with.” This past weekend at UFC on FOX 8, a reporter suggested the promotion might use Daley (33-12-2) in his native England rather than attempting to secure a visa for the fighter in the U.S. It was with that latter process that White anticipated potential trouble, given the difficulty in getting permission to enter the country. But it was also the fighter’s negative public statements toward the promotion following his release from first UFC contract, which came immediately after he sucker-punched Josh Koscheck three years ago at UFC 113.

Bellator has been rumored to be joining the pay-per-view fray, possibly with a Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Roy Jones Jr. in a boxing match… and possibly putting that boxing match up against the UFC’s big year-end pay-per-view, which features the Chris Weidman vs. Anderson Silva and Ronda Rousey vs. Miesha Tate rematches. That hasn’t been made official yet, but if Bellator and parent company Viacom do enter the pay-per-view realm, UFC president Dana White welcomes them, with a warning.

Viacom is expected to announce plans to go head-to-head with pay-per-view juggernaut Zuffa LLC and its UFC 168 offering at next week’s Bellator 97 event on Spike TV. An unveiling of Bellator fighter Quinton “Rampage” Jackson’s plans with the promotion will likely include a pay-per-view boxing match with former multi-division boxing champ Roy Jones Jr., multiple sources close to the event today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). The fight is expected to take place at the end of the year, though a date and weight class for the bout could not immediately be confirmed. It’s also unclear how the event will be branded given Bellator and parent company Viacom’s focus on MMA. “We’ve been talking to Roy and his people over a potential ‘Rampage’ vs. Roy fight for over seven months,” a representative from Jackson’s longtime team, Wolfslair MMA, told MMAjunkie.com. CEO: Bellator champ Michael Chandler now one of MMA’s highest-paid lightweights

When asked how much he had to convince Bellator MMA lightweight champion Michael Chandler to sign a new long-term deal with the Viacom-owned fight promotion, Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney put it in terms everyone could understand. “I can tell you that every single time Michael and I go out to dinner for the rest of our lives, he picks up the check,” Rebney told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). That sounds just fine to the unbeaten Chandler (11-0 MMA, 8-0 BFC), who told MMAjunkie.com on Wednesday that he’d agreed to a new multi-fight contract with Bellator – one which Rebney insisted would make Chandler “one of the highest-paid lightweights in all of MMA.” The new deal comes just a week before Chandler is slated to defend the Bellator 155-pound title against Season 8 tournament winner David Rickels (14-1 MMA, 8-1 BFC) at Bellator 97 on July 31. It also comes at a time when Chandler had roughly a year left on his existing Bellator contract, according to Rebney. The new contract will keep him off the free agent market and with Bellator for years to come, both men said in a phone interview.

Barring settlement, Eddie Alvarez vs. Bellator MMA will stretch well into 2014

Eddie Alvarez won’t be fighting any time soon if his case with Bellator MMA goes to trial. According to documents filed Monday in U.S. district court, the two parties aren’t required to see each other in court until after Sept. 15, 2014, when a pre-trial conference may take place. That means it could be near the end of 2014 before a jury gets involved, unless a settlement takes place. In January, the ex-champ and the Viacom-owned promotion filed dueling lawsuits primarily over a matching clause in the fighter’s contract. Alvarez (24-3 MMA, 8-1 BFC) seeks to free himself from the promotion to sign a deal with the UFC. The fighter largely has been quiet since giving a series of interviews accusing Bellator of shady behavior after the expiration of his previous contract with the promotion. Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney has denied any underhanded dealings with the fighter and indicated they’ll see each other in court. Attorneys for Alvarez and Bellator outlined a plan for moving forward with the case, which calls for the discovery portion to be completed by Feb. 28, 2014 and depositions, or out-of-court testimony, by July 28. The two may add parties to the case by Oct.

Bellator inks broadcast deal in United Kingdom with Viacom-owned VIVA

Bellator’s broadcast reach now extends to 116 countries after inking a deal to bring tournament action to U.K. MMA fans. The Viacom-owned VIVA channel is set to broadcast Bellator MMA events starting this month with Bellator 96, which kicks off the promotion’s “Summer Series,” the promotion announced today in a press release. Bellator’s ninth season begins in September. Viacom also owns a majority stake in Bellator after a deal struck in October 2011. VIVA boasts a broadcast reach of 26 million homes and garners half its audience from the 16-34 year-old demographic, with 3.7 million young viewers tuning in monthly, stated the release.
