Upon retiring from fighting, Matt Hughes took on an entirely new role as the UFC Vice President of Athletic Development and Government Relations. Much like his pioneering role as a fighter in the cage, Hughes is now learning on the job outside of the cage, trying to figure out how he can best help the newer fighters coming into the sport prepare for the various aspects of their career outside of actually fighting. Hughes recently talked about his new role in an interview with MMAWeekly.com’s Ryan McKinnell . Showtime interested in MMA return – and eyeing Invicta Fighting Championships

Showtime might be interested in getting back in the MMA business, and if it is it may already have picked a top draft pick to partner with. Showtime Sports Executive Vice President and General Manager earlier this week, according to a report from FOX Sports Latino , said the premium cable network would consider a return to broadcasting MMA – and likes Invicta Fighting Championships as a possible promotion to team up with. Showtime most recently broadcast MMA in January with Strikeforce’s final card, which took place in Oklahoma City. Former UFC heavyweight Shane Carwin takes executive role with Colorado’s PFC

Former UFC interim heavyweight titleholder Shane Carwin (12-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) walked away from fighting earlier this year, but he’ll remain involved in MMA. Carwin recently announced he’s joined Colorado’s Prize Fighting Championship as the promotion’s vice president of fighter development. “I’m really excited for this opportunity,” Carwin stated in an official release. “I always remember fighting and wishing I had someone to talk to that had gone through the ranks, made it to the UFC and retired successfully. It always seemed like promoters, managers, armchair fighters and trainers were giving me advice from every direction.

Connecticut Becomes the 49th State to Legalize Mixed Martial Arts, Leaving New York as the Final Frontier

The Connecticut General Assembly’s House of Representatives on May 7 passed bill HB-5277 by an overwhelming 117-26 vote. On Wednesday, the bill passed the Senate, making Connecticut the forty-ninth state to legalized mixed martial arts. UFC Vice President of Regulatory Affairs Marc Ratner reacted to the news on Twitter. HB-5277 was sponsored by Rep. Charles Clemons (124th District) and Senator Andres Ayala (23rd District), along with more than 34 additional co-sponsors – including nine Senators, Democrats and Republicans.
